I dont know about other parts of the UK so I am just assuming!  Round here no one is Ice skating on a lake or anything or no one has filled in a bit of land with shallow water for people to ice skate on.   I have a large lake near me which is frozen solid!  I would love to go ice skating on it NOW! BUT I know the security guards would come out and tell me to get off why?! I know the next day they will have diggers breaking the ice or signs up or something to make sure no one else goes onto the ice again.

When I lived in Holland for 10years I remember skating on large ponds and lakes and my local outdoor swimming pool had a large football pitch which was slightly set below which they did on purpose for the winter time as they use to get the fire engines to come and fill the entire football pitch  with water so it would freeze over and every one could come and ice skate.  I remember listening to the news for the weather reporter to say its safe to go ice skating on lakes as it will be thick enough.   Now why does this not happen in the UK?!   They want kids to do stuff instead of stabbing other kids and beating other kids up but they dont let them do n e thing.   On the news the other day a woman called 999 up to complain about kids throwing snow balls! If I was a kid in the UK I properly would do stuff I would of regret as I would of been proper bored!  Im glad I was brought up in Holland a much nicer place to grow up in.

I know I am going on and on!  Things like 3meters or more Diving boards in a swimming pool! in the UK you cant do anything but dive or jump from a stand still   your not aloud to do back flips or run on a diving board or anything. I remember in Hollond me an my mates we had like 4 or 5 of us on a diving board jumping at the same time so one of use would go extra high or run and see how far we could get or we would do what we called a bombing so we all jumped of the diving board at the same time to make the biggest splash possible.

Slides in the UK they either have a traffic light or a memeber of staff standing by the slide making sure one person goes at a time and you have to go on your back.   Well in Holland we use to go on our knees and use our hands to push our selfs to go faster and sometimes der where like 12 or more of us and we all went down at the same time we held onto each other like a train it was MINT.  We even use to stop all the water in stages so as one went we hit another with water and use to swim in the water as we went down the slide. The only thing we did get kicked out for and band for a week was putting soap down the slide as it filled the swimming pool with foam and was dangerous as it made the slide to slippery and you could go to fast and fall over the side.

First time I came to the UK I got 2 warnings one for stepping on the the diving board while some one was already on the board and second for doing a front flip I was told one more warning and I would be kicked out. I was like this is ***** so I went home.

Sorry I have gone on and on I just feel better now saying this

LOL

Yes it is!    I tell you why I decided to post this!

1. I went down the the bottom of the garden and realised that the pond was half empty. At first it looked full but I soon reaslised the Ice was actually floating and holding it self up!  I stood on it and it held me up!  I got a hammer and hit it and it wouldnt break. I hit it harder to try and break it and it took some breaking. It all caved in it was a silly thing to do I hope I havent killed the fish  Crying

2. The hose pipe has frozen up so I went to focus to buy a new one to fill the pond up. I drove past the large lake near me and thought people could be ice skating on that and having fun.

Part of the nanny state we're all being forced to live under these days. As far as ice skating goes, plenty of that here in the tropics of Toronto. Most parks have rinks set up to skate on. My fav place to skate was on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa around New Years. The Canal runs right through the city. Come New Years Eve theirs lots of skating and drinking on the ice. You can skate right up to Parliment Hill and watch a pretty decent Fireworks display. Ottawa has a pretty decent winter festival as well called "Winter-lude", the city builds large ice castles where you can run amok in and have snowball fights, drink some hot cider, eat some maple toffee and just have some fun. Toronto is a lot more stuck up in that regard. Quebec city also has a crazy winter festival with toboggan runs right down the main boardwalk. I think it's a five year sentence if you're caught smiling in public here though

I was born in England and lived there till I was 27, then I moved to New York for 7 years, now Canada for the last 5 years. I have seen nanny states in all three places, you just can't escape it. England isn't better or worse than the other two, for example, I have two young kids and it's crazy how over-protected kids are in North America. They can't even blow their noses without the mothers getting involved.

So I guess it's six of one and half a dozen of the other, but it's true we can go skating pretty much anywhere in winter!

I moved to Amsterdam January 2nd, 1997. When I got there, the canals were all frozen and many of the boats were pushed out and alist on top of the ice. It seems to me they held a REALLY long skating race down the canals that was typically only held every 50 years or so. I guess they'll get to do it again...

Funny how now we have expensive devices so kids can virtually kick a ball outside instead of actually doing it. Does England normally get cold enough for outdoor skating? I know you've got some weather this thing but the last time I was in London, Mid january, it was jacket weather at best

Holland isn't normally as cold as it was during the winter of '96/'97. I suspect this is another oddly cold winter.

I'm officially blaming Canada for the cold temps and high winds here.  I wouldn't have had to shovel 3" of rain.  Smile

Also, I'd like to see Festool come out with a snow shovel.  3 handle pullouts in one day with 3 shovels is just ridddiccccuuuulous.  I'm sure the neighbors got a good laugh.

Oddly enough there's not much snow up here at all. You gotta love global warming, soon we'll be a tropical beach side paradise and all of you will drown, it's gonna be awesome!

Interesting, the last couple of years here in Pittsburgh (SW Pennsylvania) we've had colder winters.  We've had 2"-3" of snow on the ground for several weeks now, that's not unheard of but it's not the norm either.  I say bring on that seasonal global warming. Big Grin

Bob?   I'll buy one from you.  It took me 15 hours with shovels.
