So what are people doing right now?
« on: July 24, 2018, 01:04 AM »
So it’s 12:00 AM and I’m performing a troop inspection of some of the new luminaries I’ve replaced in the yard. Temp is 72 degrees, humidity 55%, and it’s beautiful outdoors. This is the reason we covet summer.
Sipping on a cocktail, listening to Bryan Ferry and thinking about the upcoming Mars event on the 27th and how to photograph it.

What’s anyone else in the free woodworking world doing tonight?

Check that...just switched to the Eagles.  [cool]

Hmmm, well I just came in from the shop after putting together a dollie to move a bookcase build to customers house later this week.

Nothing but rain here today.

Well let’s see, it’s almost 1am and it’s a cool wonderful 85 with a “feels like” of 96 with a dry comfortable 77% humidity. I am contemplating my day tomorrow and how I can move from my air conditioned house to my air conditioned truck to my air conditioned volunteer workshop and back while spending no more than 5 minutes at a time outside. Just another beautiful summer day in Houston. Forecast calls for a high of 97 tomorrow with a “feels like” of 108. Have a great night!

Having a bottle of red.  Spent the day with a friend helping on a small but expensive wine cooler alcove project.  Trying to bring him up to speed on the bid he received.  Opened up a wall in their condo for the project to check electrical and plumbing to discover a local Sunday paper dated 11/24/91.  That was cool.  Talked to his wife, a friend of mine of over 40 years who is hanging in Alaska for a couple of months, helping her daughter and SIL process a bunch of Salmon they caught today.  Bringing her up to speed on wine cooler project and talking story for a couple of hours.  Plus tonight did a quick look to see if any feral pigs were around that have been over running my property.  None (that I saw). Tomorrow, I transfer live trops on their way to Amsterdam from the Big Island, walking paperwork through USDA and Fish&Wildlife. Finishing my red.

I'm sitting here getting ready to wake up the boss to give her her morning pill (thyroid).  Then to fix my own breakfast and pull apart the kitchen cabinet that surrounds the ice box (to you young whipper snappers, that's the 'fridge) The old one broke down and with only a 1/16" of clearance at the top, I figure it is easier to pull the cabinet than to take the chance of not being able to slide the new one into place. Nothing is plumb or level in our house and I might end up having to make adjustments to the cabinet anyhow.  After delivery, I will be going out into the world to earn money to pay for all of the above.

OOPS! Just checked the weather forecast. At 3:00 Am. it is 71º with 93% humidity.  Rain will be coming in around 8am. It rained off and on all day yesterday. Looks like the same for today. Maybe I will go for my blood test that should be done this week. Guess I won't be starting breakfast prep at my usual hour of 4am.  Life gets complicated when one reaches 39 and a few months (nearly 600 of those).

I have to get a price for taking down two trees on a client's property. Will need to call my tree guy at 6:30 am. I will do some prep work for those two trees after delivery of our fridge. (That work I can do in the rain) I also have to figure out why my mower kept dying on me yesterday. It acts like water in the gas tank. I hope that is the problem. I will go out with a flash lite and peer into the tank to check as soon as I get finished with this note.

Just woke the Boss Lady for her pill. She was all mumbly and with my katy-did singing in my ears, I couldn't understand her. That happens. There used to be a "song" by I don't remember who. It went something like "...Open the door, the flies fly in---------- Shut the door-------- to hot again -----------------Life gets teedjis ------- don't it?...."

Oh well. it will be interesting to find out what the day really brings.

I was asleep when you made your post.  I'm surprised so many people were up so late to reply.  I know there are some different time zones in play, but still it was pretty late especially for anyone on the East Coast.

Sometimes I find myself waking up at 3 or 4 or 5am mainly because of the puppy or sometimes just because I can't sleep, but I just lay in bed and check FOG and other news sites.  I'm rarely still awake at midnight.

Woke up at 5:00 to discover that rain had put down a couple inches of water in my basement.  Taking a break from sweeping water to the drain.  The cellar was hand poured, so not very level.  The house was built in the 1920s by my wifes grandparents...off the boat Polish immigrants.  Her Grandma was only 16 when she made the trip by herself.  Her Grandpa was a PPR crossing guard at the Sunbury, PA station.

Got up at 4:45am and went out to the covered patio for my first cup of coffee.  It only cooled off to 96F overnight so I came back in the house pretty quickly.  Today is forecast to be 122F / 50C but bone dry.  Thankfully we only get a few of these extreme heat days each year, but they really limit shop activities.

Even though my "shop" has AC, I don't move the vehicles out to the driveway like usual as I'm concerned about damage to the clear coats.  So I guess today will be spent designing my next project with Sketchup instead of making chips fly.

I think I was still sleepy when I read the post and typed my reply.  I kinda missed the point of what we're doing at that moment, not what I was doing when the original post was made.

I'm now drinking my first cup of coffee and sitting in front of my computer starting my work day.

I now know how NAINA feels  :'(

Tried to order with Cabela's as I have done in the past, log-in credentials invalid. Tried to reset password, tells me I don't exist  :'(

Contacted customer support and they explained it to me:

"I'm sorry we are no longer able to receive or ship orders to Germany.
Unfortunately, due to the compliance cost associated with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we are no longer accepting orders from customers with a shipping or billing address within European Union member states. Customers from these member states may also not be able to create or log into existing online shopping accounts on cabelas.com.  We apologize for any disappointment or inconvenience this may cause."

 :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Now for plan B  [big grin] [big grin] [big grin] [big grin] [big grin] [big grin] [big grin] [big grin] [big grin]

It started raining very intensely in the middle of the night.  I went down to the shop to check on the sump pump.  There's only a tiny bit of water in the very bottom of the sump and the sump walls are dry.  YESSSSS!!!!  Given that some people in the region have been flooded out of their homes, I am very grateful for great drainage and an excellent sump pump, even if it's never been really needed.

Would have liked some rain to cool it off a bit, but as that didn't happen we currently measure 35°C (95°F) thus I'm sweating like a cold beer coming straight out of the freezer.

Which brings me to my plan for the near immediate future: to grab some cold beers and the bicycle to head out to the local lake and cool off a bit.

Have a nice day.

Having coffee and looking out the kitchen patio door.  It’s overcast and 56 degrees (F) here in Monterey.  Will get up to 65 today in what passes for summer on the peninsula.  Cool but I love it here.  Read the post from @Alanbach and it made me think of the workshop I’ll be in once I retire and move to Monroe, Louisiana in two month.  Pretty much the same high temp/high humidity as Houston there.  Will have to spend some time keeping the cast iron from rusting.

Installing displays I built in a showroom. A salesman is meeting with clients 5' away and I need to drill a hole in the concrete floor for an anchor. Trying to find the quiet setting on my hammerdrill.

It's 11:00 am and despite the air conditioning, I'm soaked with sweat. Another summer day in Vancouver's Fraser valley.

I cleared out my basement workshop a couple of nights ago to redo the concrete stain on the floor.  Finished the floor prep last night so tonight was painting day.

Just finished posting about the Denver Mini Kez Colorado 2018 event and I'm headed to the back porch here at the Harvey Wildes (HarveyWildes refers to my residence, not to me) to read up on .NET AppDomains (ugh!) before proposing a test strategy based on what I find.  Later, to relax, I'll resume the process of milling up the baseboard for my basement finish.  A little boring as woodworking tasks go, but a welcome counterpoint to the day job.

@Max Fracas - Over the last 37 years my wife and I have lived in four homes which means I have had four workshops. We have been in this house for ten years now and when we moved here I did something that most would consider extravagant and I understand that not everyone could afford to do it. My garage here was already finished with Sheetrock on walls and ceiling and is reasonably insulated (although not completely) so I had a central air conditioning unit installed. It is a three ton unit (smallest available) and it even had a small electric heat strip in it (which I need at least four or five days per year😊). It is a pretty high efficiency unit and at 3 tons is oversized for the 500 sq. ft. so the electricity usage has been very reasonable. It has a programmable thermostat and I usually keep it around 76 or 77 in there (around here that is a very comfortable shop). The difference it has made to the condition of my tools is amazing not to mention how many more hours I am capable of working out there based on the comfort. As you know it is not uncommon for us to have 100-150 days per year of ninety degree plus days and our humidity is often off the charts so it makes such a huge difference having it here. I know it sounds crazy extravagant but man I love having it.

It’s 12:45 CST and the rain has finally diminished. Time for a quick cocktail and some music. Cranked up the heater on the patio, thinking about what’s for dinner tomorrow, the bathroom shelf I’m making from an aluminum extrusion with LED edge lighting and decided to que up some Blondie. I forgot how good she really is. I may prefer Prince, Jimi or Eric Clapton but darn, she is talented.

“She’s like a millionaire, walking on imported air.”

Here’s a teaser on what the glass shelf will look like. This glass is 1/2” thick. The actual shelf will be either 1/4” or 5/16” or 8mm. Gotta check around tomorrow and find out what’s available.

Saw Blondie two weeks ago. One of my first favorites. And one of the first records I bought.

That right there is a genuine 45rpm!  [big grin]

Guitar player ( Tommy Kessler ) was unexpected and really good !!
