I figure if I post it I'll actually do it For no apparent reason I chose tonight to turn over a new leaf. At 100kg (220lb) my mini mal sinks and hills are a lot steeper on the pushie. I just got off the rowing machine ... 7km for 33 minutes - terrible, but it's calories burnt at that's what counts. So, no more excessive carbs, no more wine, no more junk. That's it - no more lazy! Three targets ... 93kg (205lb), 88kg (194lb), 83kg (183lb) and three carrots (the first couple of kg come off easily, so I'm trying to be aggressive). I'm not going to set a time target until I've got through the first week as a bit of a reality check, but it's probably going to be at least 10~12 weeks on top of a busy life. Carrot number one I think should be a LS130. I can't make the OF1010, PDC18-4 or compressor carrots as I've already committed to them and that's not very motivating. Carrots two and three don't need to be Festools, but I'm not ready to buy big equipment yet so I'm up for ideas. After marking out some ply today with a very average 600mm T-square and 1200mm rule I think some quality marking and measuring kit could be good carrots.

I've been using a great workout regime that I think is highly effective, uses minimal to no equipment and takes 20 to 30 minutes a session. Look up Mark Lauren 's "you are your own gym".

I can only get the 600 square locally and the 1200 rule. The 1200 square is what I want, but probably too long for international post

Did you go for the Ebook or the iPhone app? I was going to give this a try ... http://primalblueprint.com/pages/Mark-Sisson.htmlI'm tripping over fitness equipment at home, but it's not the be all and end all ... having it makes it easy to think "I'll use it tomorrow" (well, for me it has). Getting into the rhythm of a program is the best way to hit fitness targets. It's sad to think that years ago I never needed to "do exercise", because I was alway out having fun cycling, surfing, diving, paddling, etc. Now I'm not fit enough to have fun ...

I did 1 lb a week for 52 weeks. Some weeks were more and some less but at the end of the year I was 50 lbs lighter. Than you have to keep it off. Also I found if I did situps my stomach was bigger, muscle behind fat. You lose weight in an order, men different than woman. You cannot just lose the area you want first unless that IS the first area for weight lose. Throw the machines out. Aerobics work outs are the best. Burn calories and work all parts of the body. I must think I'm a doctor. MARK

I have not been on the forum in a long while. I have been working on CNC and my health.
While I have been gone I have lost 81 lbs. I started on Jan 1 and by My 25th I hit my goal weight of 152 and then lost another 6 lbs.
I have been holding at a steady 150 lbs since and I feel great!
No secret, I just watch what I eat(religiously) and walk, walk, walk. I even feel fine taking my shirt off at the pool for the first time in over 10 years.

I've taken an engineer approach to shedding my weight. I track my daily calories with a nice app called ShapeUp Club and when I hit 1500 kcal I stop eating for the day. This guarantees a weight loss of about 100g per day if you stay with it without any extra working out. (This figure is valid for someone my height 187cm (6' 1.6"), age & weight, but the app calculates this for you).
You soon learn to prefer reasonably healthy food after a couple of day of running out of calories at lunch time... And suprisingly, I've found out that most of my excess calories come from bread & cappuccinos and not so much from munchies... So I only have a piece of bread in the morning and one piece with lunch and I can eat just about my normal dinners and portions. Dropped sugar out of my tea & coffee too.
I've lost since January a good 9kg and I must admit that being on summer holiday has had me slip back a few kg's. I'm targeting to be under 100kg before I turn 40 in a couple of years time... Still 20kg to go..
Get cracking Kev!

I play squash 2-3 times a week, at least one day out of those 2-3 I play for 1.5-2 hours, but that still wasn't enough to keep the weight off. Great aerobic and anaerobic systems exercise. I was eating too much, particularly when I was working hard. I was loosing to the 25 yr olds (I'm 57) so I stopped eating bread with my butter, lost 15lbs and I am still loosing...just not as badly. Really pisses me off. I walk with the dog...or rather he walks me. Tim

Wow Dovetail, that's impressive! Kev, you got me thinking with this thread - I think I'll join your endeavor. Starting out at ~300 lbs (will have to check what the scale says for sure) - I'm going to shoot for 275 for end of summer and 250 for Christmas. Edit: height = 6'3"

Go to snack for me is: 1 box of plain cheerios, 1 box raisins, 1 bag almonds-sliced, 1 bag walnuts and 1 container no salt peanuts. Mix all in a LARGE Tupperware bowl. Lasts from 1 to 2 weeks. Tea cup for snack size. Nuts help you go longer without hunger.

Drawing to the end of day one (yeh ... over a hundred to go) and I've been good, but I am STARVING On the height / weight thing - I'm 178cm (5'10") so 100kg (220lb) is on the high side - I was stocky, but now I'm more "stomach-y". For the sake of the sciences I'll aim to drop 150 grams a day as a minimum. May need to revise this after week one. Later, if I can get my cycling fitness back, I'll be able to maintain things, 200km through the weekdays will leave the weekends for fun. I'm doing all of the food research, going to try and make it tasty to keep it interesting.

Kevin,
If you are inclined to "do the food research" I would suggest that you get your hands on the movie "Forks Over Knives" which came out in 2010 (I believe). For anyone interested in good health/nutrition and getting back into shape this is a great place to start. From there I would suggest reading "Eat to Live" by Dr. Joel Furhman. I use this book as my diet "bible". If any of this is of interest to you I can easily share a few other resources. Oh, by the way, along with transforming my shop over to the Festool system I have been working towards transforming by physique to a much better place. I have lost over sixty pounds. On a whim, I ran in a road race on July 4th (4.5 miles) and finished 8th in my age group (+55).
If you can't find the movie I would be happy to lend you my copy.
Best of luck on your newest project.
John

Thanks John, We've got Eat to Live! I should probably read it then I have heard of Forks Over Knives, I'll certainly watch it (just watched a youtube preview) - I have watched a number of very scathing videos on what we eat in western society, but it's easy to know stuff and still not act on it ... I'm changing that now. Please share as many resources as you choose, I am most interested. I'm both excessive and obsessive ... couldn't hurt if I focus my personality flaws on my own fitness for a while. Something a colleague of mine that's working in the US in the medical field shared with me the other day is the percentage of GDP the US spends on health (hospital, pharmaceutical, treatment, etc), it was something like 17% ... the next highest country was 9%. I've also read (unverified) that the caucasian body type is more resilient to the poor western diet than the mongolian body type (if an American and Chinese person ate the same poor diet, the Chinese person would die sooner). Stay active. Be active. Find something you enjoy to the point that you're unhappy if you don't get it in. I "workout" religiously. Rock climbing and mt biking. If I dont get one in during any particular day I'll bang out a ton of situps and push ups because I feel guilty that I didn't get ot enjoy myself.
I eat very healthy but there does come a point where you're burning so much you just need to get in calories, no matter how. It's a nice little bonus. You get to the point where you can more or less eat what you want, but yous tick healthy because you know its right and you really do develop a taste for real, wholesome food once you stick to it for a week.
Have some discipline. Have some patience and be realistic. I see and hear so many folks stop with a diet or regiment because in 2 weeks they weren't just skinny. We're not in 4th grade. Be serious about it and it'll happen.

There's a high spec Yeti 575 without a scratch in the garage and the fact that my downhill race bike that's, gathering dust, is a Rotec probably tells a sad story ... I won't list the others. Chin ups are good if you're a climber I think I'm doing two chin ups when I close my mouth

Kev, the first week is hardest - you will feel hungry with the diminished amounts until your stomach shrinks to accommodate the lesser amounts you are now eating and then the constant hungry feeling will go away. Just try not to have a gutbash every other day and stretch your stomach right back and try to eat a healthy breakfast, two warm meals and small snacks like an apple & cup of tea after every meal (morning, afternoon, evening) to keep yourself from feeling hungry and going on a snack hunt.

Kevin I made the same decision about 8 weeks ago. I am doing a high protein diet and walking and have lost 10 lbs. the trick is to eat smaller portions 5-6 times a days because it increases your metabolism. I am doing Herbalife shakes 2 times a day plus 1 nutritional meal for dinner. My snacks are fruit and nuts. I know already feel better. My starting wt. was 240 and my goal is 190.
Good Luck to everyone making this life style change.

The key to eating right is to never get too hungry. When you allow yourself to get really hungry, that's when it is hard to eat healthy. If you are starving all you want is something fat and greasy. Eat 5-6 smaller healthy meals and always have some fruit, veggies, and nuts to snack on throughout the day. Drink lots of water and stay away from soda and drinks with artificial flavouring and high fructose corn syrup. Stay active and find an activity that you enjoy that gets your heart rate up, even if its for 10-15min a day to start. Have someone like a friend or spouse that wants the same results and that you can be accountable to.
Being healthy, feeling good, and being in great shape is a lifestyle. It is not something you do every now and again when you feel like it. Get motivated and don't make excuses for yourself. Sorry, if that seemed too harsh. I was a 2 sport college athlete, wrestling and cross country, and I also coached in college for 7years, trained in MMA, and used to be a health and fitness extremist. I have learned how to take a more moderate and long term approach to living a healthy lifestyle and want to enjoy my life to the fullest.

When you have a meal make sure you eat till your full try eating foods with plenty of fibre, protein beans, eggs etc which will keep you feeling fuller for longer! Which will help to prevent you from snacking which is a easy way to GAIN weight and so snacking should be avoided!
Always try to keep moving even just bouncing or shaking your legs while your eating or watching tv etc will burn of some energy alot more than you think!
Things like soup take longer for your stomach to process so will keep you feeling fuller for longer!
If you want to gain muscle THE ONLY best thing to have is MILK straight after sport to repair muscle I have used milk since I was 12 to gain muscle when playing rugby I wouldnt drink anything else just had about 10 glasses of milk!
JMB
So why are you such a wimp then?
