US Checks - what to do with them?
« on: December 16, 2015, 10:51 AM »
Years ago I bought a framed stock certificate of (then) Apple Computer, Inc. as a gift for my oldest son. A while ago I took it of his hands because he needed the cash (yeah, …).

The certificate is in my name and the last couple of years quarterly checks have come my way. The amount on each check is just a few bucks (five, six) and to cash them in at a Dutch bank costs at least six times the face value.

So, now I have more than a dozen uncashed checks (Bank of America, Atlanta) and a burning question — what can I do with them? I am willing to write them over to a charity or whatever but do not know what the proper procedure is. Your help is appreciated!
Cheers, Bert Vanderveen

Checks older that 6 months will likely be stale dated and not cashable.  There will still be a record of the issuing account (Apple) owing you that money but the check will probably not be honored by a bank over 6 months old.  You should be able to contact Apple with the various check info and get them to reissue, if they do they may very well issue a single check in a larger amount and make it worthwhile to cash.  Here in Canada we can get US dollar denominated bank accounts and then depositing or writing US checks is no different cost wise than local currency.  Not sure if you have the same options.

I would contact investor or stockholder services about how request a reissue of the checks. You most likely will need to sent the checks to them. They might also be able to identify missing uncashed checks and reissue them with some additional paper work.
