I'm planning to go, probably on the 7th - not sure what to expect. I have a few LN planes (large and small chisel planes, #62 LA Jack, #60 1/2 adj mouth block plane, and the bronze edge plane) - not sure I'm in the market for anything (maybe a DT saw?), but it might be good to get hands-on pointers on using/sharpening their planes.

I went to one of these events in NYC.  It was actually pretty underwhelming, though Thomas the company founder was there.  The small demo table was too crowded to test anything comfortably.  It was more just a chance to see all their tools laid out in a row -- but since I'd been to the showroom already in Maine, this was not a novelty for me.

I have gone to a couple of them and I think they are pretty good. Actually, I have been to three of them now that I think about it. It is a good way to handle the tools. Of course, I too went to the HQ and nothing compares to that experience. I might need to check it out tomorrow when I am back in CA.

Well, I went to it - it would have been nice to know where to park and which building it was in - but I found it. Good crowd, several demos going on, some hands-on stuff happening. I didn't actually order anything - just looked and played a bit, and listened and learned a few things. AND I got a little LN balsa wood glider ("for the kids" - hehe).
I had been thinking about a dovetail saw - but I ended up ordering one from Rob Cosman directly, along with the Kerf X-10 that helps with blind dovetails. Rob called me personally to make sure I understood how they worked together, to tell me about his project to help wounded vets, and to invite me to one of his workshops. I gotta say, I am more impressed than ever with him and what he's doing. He made my day, and I am very excited to get his saw in my hands... AND I got an airplane! It was a good day.

Did you enjoy the Fort Houston event @McNally Family?  I am thinking about driving to the Austin gig later this week and trying to figure out how much time to budget for the event.
Maybe I will learn (or buy) something and get the nerve up to plane the benchtop I built earlier this year.
By the way, I learned last weekend what not to do with a hand plane.  I am finishing up a hanging tool cabinet from the Fine Woodworking plans, and I have it up on the wall with a bunch of tools in it.  I was sanding the sides with a Festool sander, and the power cord pulled a Bailey #4 off the shelf.  Dropped straight onto my big toe, and my Topsiders didn't do much to cushion the blow.  I thought about posting a photo, but it was too gruesome.  [scared] Maybe the Bailey got jealous of the Festool sander.

And they say hand tools are much safer than power tools!  [eek] Kidding - sorry for your pain!

@Mismarked

We ended up out of town that weekend,  so I did not attend.  I was very disappointed and tried everything I could to shuffle my schedule, but it could not be changed.  Let us know if you are able to attend the Austin show, and give us your impression.  Everything I hear is the visit is well worth the time.

Will do.  I made the mistake of looking through their catalog last night.  I now have a list of tools that I didn’t need last week but the day before the event suddenly seem to be absolutely essential. [big grin]

Went to the Austin event today. It was really great and well worth the 2.5 hour drive each way.  Tried out almost every tool i had even the slightest curiosity about and learned a lot. Even learned how a froe is used.
Ordered a few items, including a #8, which was not even on my wish list, and decided to wait on a few others that had been on the list. It helped a lot to be able to hold and use the tools.
One of these days I will have the time to stop collecting toys and start using them in earnest.

After reading about your visit to Austin, I am now really disappointed I was unable to attend the show here in Nashville.  I too have their catalog, and spend much time drooling.  Last year I focused on chisels, and would like a nice block plane.  Perhaps for Christmas!

I am sorry you missed it, but they will have more in the future.  I can't stop thumbing through the catalog.  It is as bad as the Festool craving.

I think you're going to be really happy with the #8.  Since I got it this Summer, it has actually seen more use than the #7, particularly for things like panel flattening.

That makes me feel better.  Normally I would research obsessively for months before pulling the trigger, and as I said it wasn't even on the wish list.  I am still trying to figure out chisels.
I tried both the 7 and 8 at the show and didn't feel a huge difference between the two.  The LN rep said many would get the 7 to have the interchangeable frog, but later realize they did not want to change out frogs all the time.  He preferred the 8 for its mass.
I must say that both of them felt a lot lighter than the Hammer A3.  ;D  Although neither the 7 nor the 8 would plane both sides of the board at the same time, using a well-tuned bench plane for the first time made me realize there would be more down the road.  I can't wait for the next LN road show.

Apparently these Lie-Nielsen events plant latent seeds in the mind - Since attending the event, I've purchased a little bronze edger from them as well as a 5 1/2 and an extra 50deg frog... ouch.  The 5 1/2 should be here next week. It will be my first non-low angle bench plane...
