I MUST HAVE ONE!!!!
« on: June 30, 2012, 09:50 PM »
Found this scribing tool online. I have the Fastcap Scribe tool. But from what I've seen in the demonstration video, this is WAY better [eek]. Well......for most situations anyway.

Looks like a really nice scribe.  Would be nice if they had an 'awl' blade as well for scribing against wood as an awl doesn't track the grain like a blade.

Very interesting.

I'd been thinking about this perfect butt scribe for a bit, but I like the adjust-ability of yours.

The ThingaMeJig looks pretty good. I just wish the beveled carbide cutters were inverted.
The deeper you scribe the more the scribe line is beveled...on the keeper side of the work.

It's made of Aluminium (Thats aluminum for all you north Americans) so I'm sure you could modify one of the points so that the cutter could be inserted upside-down

The inserts appear to be standard used in the metal working industry -- they are probably available with the hole chamfered on the reverse side.  As you say the way it's setup it leaves a bit of the ascribed line on the "keeper" side.  I'm not sure how the scale relates to the cutting tip -- it may throw it off by the thickness of the insert.

It's a very clever tool that will be great for installers.

One with vacuum pickup and a dust shield.  Throw in a light and it's perfect.  Vacuum triggered, lighted scribing tool.
U.L. certified of course.

I would take that to mean the scribe in one hand and the scale (or whatever you are using as a guide) in the other hand.   [unsure]

I'm going to spray paint a few thousand of these bad boys red and sell them for 50.00.  They're one handed, and you can use them with your left or right hand!  And all you need is a pencil (for an extra 10.00 bucks I'll throw one in).

It looks well made, and very nice, please don't get me wrong.  Just a little overkill when a 3.00 compass scribe is faster, easier, and smarter...

The size of the base seems like it would really limit the amount of detail you could pick up.

No scribing brick or stone with this tool...

To me it seems targeted at matching floors and walls - think it'll do those well - but you're dead right, the "riding" base size dictates the fractal detail. It'll do stone, but rough brings I doubt ... but that isn't it's forte.

I do have one of those -- the only issue is making certain the thumb nuts are tight enough so the size doesn't change mid-task.

btw, your brick scribing motivated me to do this with the tile.  So where do I send the bill for the few hours of my life I won't get back?

Not trying to sound over simplistic, but a pencil taped to the top of a wooden block works just as well for those applications.

Its a nifty gizmo, but I don't think its worth $80, or even $10 for that matter.

Seems very over priced for what it does. BUT for a gloss kitchen plinth I could see it being useful to limit splintering when cutting.

Religious affiliations aside, solely from a material/ manufacturing aspect the price doesn't seem crazy for a piece of machined anodized aluminum. I have purchased anodized motorcycle parts for more money and they don't even have moving parts.

In terms of functional value to me, $80 for this tool is a lot.

Hence why I said overpriced for what it does. I done care how cheap some thing is made, if it cost $1 to make but sold for $100 but made my job quicker easier and more precise I would buy it because it has value.

A simple compas will never beat scribing something like brick work in detail  but  to me this tool seems handy for scribing skirting and plinths etc where you are not wanting to go into to much detail scribing all you want is just a nice constant flow which is better with a wider base.

I know I read that but like you said!  Some people (ME) like shiny stuff!

BUT

still a block of wood is time waisting if you only had to  make ONE maybe still annoying though that you have to go and rip/cut a piece of wood to the depth you want for scribing to place your pencil on top to then tape it down in place and if you have various depths to scribe you end up making a few blocks.  Easier having a tool like that you can just turn it to required depth you want.
