Some PB Swiss goodness ................
« on: August 03, 2018, 12:59 AM »
............... or not.

Decided to get he PB Swiss slotted screwdrivers in order have a set with parallel tips. Unfortunately I did not like them at all. Well that's not true I liked the handles , and the general quality, but the  tips ....... not at all.

The theory is sound and I have one or two parallel tip drivers. But the PB Swiss do not seem to fit well in the screw recess. When using the correct size driver in the correct size screw I found it very difficult to keep it from slipping out or camming out.  Even when going up a size to get a tighter fit they tended to slip out. Tried them in quite a few different screws. In fact my old Craftsman tapered and several other tapered drivers worked better.

I just don't think they fit the recess tight enough there was quite a bit of play. And the edges  and corners of the tips are not crisp and square. The are more rounded and eased. They actually remind of a screwdriver that is worn out. I think this contributes to the slipping.  I know that the corners are supposed to be  "clipped" to fit the shape of a screw head and a countersink. But these are more rounded rather than cut at an angle.

I have one parallel tip Wera to compare. And it just looks like the tip is a better design. The Wera Parallel tips are discontinued but I managed to track them down and a set should be along in a couple weeks. Looking forward to trying them out. Hoping they will perform better.

Only one picture. I forgot to take a close up of the tips and they have already been returned.

When you need parallel head screwdrivers, and yours are like this ...

... then take them to the bench grinder and add a hollow ...

Woodworking screwdriver are no better than these ...

Thanks Oliver, I will just let you know when I post and you can add the pics for me.   [thumbs up]

  --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I will point out that the pictures Oliver posted are not of a worn screwdriver, that is the way the tip is from the factory.  I have added a close up of the one Wera parallel tip that I have. When I get the rest of the set I will post if they are better worse etc. But you can see the difference in the  "finish" of the tip. The Wera edges are sharper. I    suspect   that the Wera will hold better.

I could not try the Wera (largest size 7) that I have because I do not have a screw large enough on hand. I also could not compare the tip measurements to the PB Swiss size 7 due to not having that PB Swiss size.
