Looking for recommendations on the proper size and type of screws for cabinet box and drawer box construction. Using 3/4" Ply and 1/2" ply.

GRK Fasteners R4 9x2'' ubergrade for the boxes and the 8x3 1/8'' ubergrade for hanging the uppers. For me, the best darn screw I ever used.

Plain cabinet grade 3/4" ply for garage storage using the 32mm sys, 1/2" ply for the drawer boxes with 1/4" ply bottoms. Dominoes for alignment. Which type and size GRK fasteners should I use R4 or Cabinet or both. No pocket holes. Will be hanging uppers with french cleats.

I use the R4 multi purpose 9x2" for 18mm ply (3/4"). And I use the cabinet 8 x 3 1/8" for hanging my uppers.
I domino the fronts backs and center of the boxes, then used four of the R4 9 x 2" drilled into the sides. Then I made a skin to cover the screw holes, and
attached the skins to the side of the boxes from the inside of the cabinet with the GRK cabinet 8 x 1 1/4".

I came across the GRK on youtube. Woodcraft carries them, but I found them at my local Home Depot a lot cheaper then woodcraft.
Plus the Home Depot has a bigger selection of sizes.

Erock, when HD starts carrying something thats usually when i bail, but i really like these GRKs. I dont use them for joining FFs. They recommend a trim head screw for this operation and i just doubt the holding power with that set up? Eric

I'm not a big fan of Fastenal...their customer service at my local locations is terrible. I also purchase through buygrkfasteners.com. Ron, I do a lot of Azek repair. Most of the McMansions in my area were built with trim that lasted less then 10 years. When I saw it at HD i got scared. They also have a sign above the display that says "Azek - starting at $3.77" Man, am I getting ripped off? Eric

Don't get too worried about "best". Use common sense and you'll figure out what you'll need. In the beginning of this thread you asked about drawer and cabinet box construction. 1/2" to 1/2" drawer boxes could be put together with 1 1/4" screws and 3/4" ply cabinet boxes 2" screws, #6 or #8 size. For hanging cabinets 2 3/4" or the 3 1/8" #8. In general I like GRK screws but they do have one major drawback, they don't draw material together all that well. You'll need to clamp stubborn pieces tight before screwing. |

Rocky...as a cabinet installer I carry grk #8 1", 1 1/4", 1 1/2", 1 3/4", 2" & 2 1/2. I use 2 1/2" truss head/cabinet screw for hanging my cabinets. I've never had a cabinet fall due to my screws...I've seen people overload a cabinet & the backer is still on the wall!
For box assembly when the sides are not visible or if they're getting covered I use dominos and 1 1/2" screws...screwing from the outside of the box!

Brice is correct about drawing plywoods together...I have coarse threaded black square drive screws that I purchase at woodcraft that I use when necessary. It's definitely a predrill situation though!

I glanced at the pricing on the Azek at the Depot once and it wasn't any cheaper if my memory is right. Although I'm pay a little less than you are. |
