Looking for circular stair design, and building resources.
« on: February 04, 2018, 09:36 AM »
Hi All,

I have a storage loft in my apartment I'd love to build a circular staircase for.
I've searched and have not found any great material, either books, or online.
Ideally I was looking for a source that could provide plans that I could build from.

Thanks for any help!

Jonathan

You're looking in the wrong places. I found this in less than minute. One of hundreds that popped up.

You didn't say if you are looking to build all wood, iron with wood treads, all iron, or something else.

Thanks Rob,

I'm looking for specific plans, elevations with cut sheets that show exactly how to build the stairs.
There's one site I found, easystair.net that comes close. They have too many restrictions in sizing though.

I'm planning on a steel center column with wood treads, risers, handrail and balusters.
Height from floor to floor is 104", I'm limited to a 48" diameter area.

I don't think that you will find what you are looking for.  In 30 seconds of googling I found that the code for the tread length is now 26".  That times 2 already exceeds your 48" space.  Then you have to allow for the center pole and railing system.

This may be of some help. It's a local DIYer approach.

As Peter mentioned, if you follow code you'll need more space than 48" because you also need to include a railing and a center post in the package.

Thanks Peter, I need to check my local code. I think stairs going to a storage space may not need to adhere to code.
I could be completely wrong, I'll make sure before building anything.

That is a distinct possibility.  I just was doing research on alternative stair designs and there is talk about code applying to "habitable spaces".

Hey Peter that is funny...I dug that article up a couple of years back when I was going to do something for my sister and brother-in-law for their outside deck. I liked it because the author needed to put the support structure below the frost line. That's at least 48" deep.  [smile]
