What router bit for flattening wide benchtoptop?
« on: January 09, 2017, 02:48 AM »
Hi everyone
My neighbour has asked me to flatten a large thick board he wants used as a small kitchen benchtop. It is cupped so either I use a belt sander or I am leaning towards doing it with the router. Too wide to run it through my desktop thicknesser.
I have various standard straight router bits but am wondering if there are specific bits designed for flattening a board? I will be running the router on a sled setup large enough to span the board.
Thank you for your impending advice

I'm about to flatten my benchtop and ordered this bit:

I haven't received it yet (shipping seems to have been a challenge!) but it seems like it could be the right bit for you as well.

I use the same type of bit as Svar. A hand plane will make quick work of the transitions between passes.

I use the Infinity for flattening my CNC table, works perfectly for me.

But if you dont have an OF2200 and only have a smaller router you better use the smaller bits, that 1 1/2" bit takes off a ton of material and creates massive dust. Dust collection is a must if you go router.

The router set up for this can get tricky if you want a perfect board in the end.. I suggest using  a friend or a local shops drum sander, NOT planer(thicknesser). Place the board in the sander hump side up and take it down a bit on that side first. Then after it looks good flip it to do the other side with a final pass.

The one who says it can't be done should avoid interrupting the person doing it.

A bit like this will save a ton of time. Not only is it wide, but it cuts very cleanly with little to no tearout. We have shops using this bit extensively to flatten slabs.

I use a bit like this and it works great, pricy but does the job.

I use the Amana Tool 45453 bit when I do any flattening.
