Jobsworth is Wanting to Host a UK Meet & Greet
« on: January 07, 2014, 11:51 AM »
I had a idea and discussed it with a couple of UK FOGGERS.

What do ya think about having a UK get together say mid late June?

It wouldnt be a Festool sponsored event no festool give aways totally unsponsored if any festool people want to come they are welcome.

But it wont be job related or any dealers want to come great but like I said it wont be job related so no pimping their stores offering deals etc its not for that.

In order to build a sense of community it should be unsponsored unstructured nothing for financial gain.

I am want of more of a bunch of festool enthusiast getting together and hanging out chatting and discussing things building a community.

I was thinking of setting up my MFT and I have a lot of their tools so if any one wants to demo something or has questions on tools we can compare notes of how we approach different work methods we can compare and demonstrate them.

Even teach each other ways we do different things.

Is anyone interested in this sort of thing? I fishing now to see if there is anyone interested in just meeting up and hanging out.

This is a small island and there are quite a bit of us who live close enough to make this possible.

I might even convince the wife (I started working her already) to have a bbq and cook up some american style hotdogs or whatever for us to munch on.

So watcha all think???

I'd be up for that! Can't commit 100% at the moment, but I'd certainly be interested!

I take it it's going to be at yours, Jobsworth? Where abouts in Cambs are you? Just checked your profile & saw you're in Huntingdon.

Yea I was planning at mines. Like I said unsponsored.

I used to go to the fine homebuilding site and it became a close group of people where we would discuss our personal issues on line etc, then someone had a idea to host a get together. People came from all across the country . It became so popular they hold them every year at other peoples homes  in different states.

Well I dont think that will happen here but I would like us to get to know each other.

Yes I'd be interested in coming along.
Great idea with some workshop demo stuff by other foggers.
I think I'll start planning on converting the van into a camper!

Im looking fwd to meeting the UK guys.

Still working the wife for the hotdogs  [big grin]

I do want to emphasize that this is more of a social get together then anything else. But with all the knowledge we have here why not answer someone questions in how to do something.

Example wood be if someone we to ask me how I lay out my pieces to be dominoed , Id show them, but if there were say 5 or 6 people there, I sure there would be 5 or 6 ways each one of us would do it.

So this is nothing fancy, no selling etc, just some tool guys getting together chatting.

So Far I got 3 fer sure and couple of maybes.

I would love to say I would come but it's a long way to travel.  I have a couple of mates down that way so it would be good to come down to see them.  Never say never eh.
Great idea btw.

You know about the breaktime fest?  Cool [cool]

Yea sort of like that getting to know each other community building that sort of thing.

I would pick you up, but 570 miles from me to you, 594 miles from you to Jobsworth, and then back again when it's all over seems like it might take up most of a weekend!  [crying]

Might be quicker to sail!  [big grin]

How does chilli dogs sound?

You guys have them before?

Man when should I let the wife know Im having this?

Ill wait till I get a final body count.

Ill be calling for that around the end of Mar.

then Ill know how many chairs and tables etc to get.

Anyone got any favorite tools they'd like to play with or share knowledge on?

I got a nice kit.

When we get the body count finalized then I guess we can come up with a list of tools we can share knowledge on.

Much as I'd love to come, it's 335 miles each way, so unless there's lots of warning so I can arrange to fit other visits en route I'll have to pass.  Good luck, though.

Ok guys, Now is there any tools that ya'll are interested in playing with.

I got a nice kit but I dont have everything.

So If we can decide on which ones folks want to play with we can get one here and make it available.

As you can see Im trying to make this worth everyones while. Whether they want to just chat and get to know each other which is the man reason for this.

Build a sense of community and share knowledge.

Cuz we all use the same tools but have different approaches.

Anyway let me know.

Personally I don't want to see anything there that I haven't already got - the temptation would be too great to spend more money!  [scared]

On a more serious note, there's currently nothing on my wish list, but I'd be happy to bring along anything that anyone else wants to have a play with and I have a few of the non-Festool bits and pieces that have popped up on the FOG recently too like the Jessem Clear Cut Stock Guides, so let's not restrict it to just Festool kit, let's consider some of the third-party bits and pieces we use to enhance the experience too.

Of course its not restricted to festool tools. Its not a festool sponsored event, its a bunch of knuckle dragging tool enthusiast getting together and hanging out. Like ive said its about creating a community and sharing knowledge.

I think it will be worth the trip from Birmingham. So I'll keep an eye open for further info.
(I could also find my way to St. Ives (Was in Huntingdonshire.) and get a pic of the Bridge, to replace the postcard I lost!!! )
It started with a : TS 55 REBQ-Plus-FS
Then parallel guides.... Extra tracks. Then a Domino 500! Now a Midi extractor. Next an MFT, Domino XL,  Dominos and cutters. Router, OF 1400 added to the armoury... Just bought my 'Domiplate'.. The LR 32 jig and track. And finally, A TS 75 Track saw, sans track. My shop is turning very green and black.
Regards, Hook.

Thank you for your offer. It was very kind of you.

I got everything food (coffee /tea ,bread for the morning hot dogs, burgers chili, cheese, ice for the sno cones, drinks soft drinks and water. Note: NO BEER OR ALCOHOL DUE TO POWER TOOLS BEING USED !!! , I rented some  chairs tables etc.

I got a good  a tool assortment some cool give aways (gonna have a drawing).

Plus Phil is bringing some of the new kit and some festool giveaways (bling).

Bring your Kreg Jig. I have one but it is about 19 years old (aluminum) and only works in 18 mil, but I can adj it to work in 12 mil.

I do got some cool Kreg Accessories to show you. One clamp I dont think you can get over here. Might be able to But we'll talk.

I got a bench plate/ mount, they do sell over here. I got the small one. Ill mount it today so you can play with it when you get here. Its pretty Kewl.

I got a very limited amount of stock 18 mil ply and wood to use incase anyone wants to use something or demo something.

So If anyone wants to bring some they have lying around would be helpful.

Phil is brining some also but ya never know how much we'll be going through If any.

If anyone wants to bring something a festool or otherwise  they need some advice on or want to share/ show us they should bring it.

I have quite a bit of kit, but not everything as my kit is for my needs.

For example I have a domino 500 but not a 700.

Im looking fwd to meeting everyone .

But Im at a loss as to how to keep everyone entertained .

There are so many talented people coming there is really nothing I can show them.

Thats another thing Ill need help with.

I hope to glean a lot of info off them and you.

This is all new to me,so Im winging it (making it up as I go).

I'll have most of my tools with me too.

Sounds like it will be a GREAT time!  I wouldn't concern myself too much about how to keep people entertained.  My guess is that everyone will naturally come together and help out.  Some tables, some tools, new faces coming together = a recipe for success and a fabulous time.

I hope someone will take some pictures for those who aren't attending.

Have a great time.

Well, I've decided to make a weekend of it - Driving down on Friday & staying with some old friends in Peterborough Friday night; then to Ron's on Saturday, then driving down to a campsite Saturday night & going to the Imperial War Museum at Duxford on Sunday!

Really looking forward to finally meeting all those that are going.

I'm still on for joining in as well.  I've spoken with Ron and I'll be bringing my Festool Jigsaw, which refuses to cut a straight line using the guide rails.  I'm sure it's only a setup issue, would be nice to learn the tricks though.

I also asked Ron if he minded me bringing a couple of items I'm looking to sell; 1 x Festool Sys-SB and 1 x Metabo Metaloc T-Loc Sys 1, both new and unused.  Selling them would certainly save on eBay fees and postage.

Thanks for setting this up Ron, great effort.

See you on Saturday

Only a few more hours to go; have a great day everyone.

And given that the sun will be shinning, do not let the sun burn you.
"Slip, slop slap and hat!"
Do not want to see too many 'beetroots' in the photographs!  [smile]

The sun is definitely shining! Maybe it's a generational thing, but most Brits I know wouldn't dream of using sun tan lotion unless they were abroad (myself included). I know we should, but the sun shines that rarely.

Reminds me of a funny story...

About 12 or 13 years ago I was working in a country pub behind the bar, and it was a glorious day, the type that we only get once every few years. One of the regulars was a young lad, the son of one of the adjacent farmers. He was a great guy, but not the sharpest tool in the box (as the rhyme goes, "Yorkshire born, Yorkshire bred; Strong in't arm, thick in't 'ead"). He'd been out in the garden trying to get a tan to impress the local ladies (he vas very proud of his appearance), and thought he would get a better tan using lotion. Unfortunately he didn't have any to hand, so decided that vegetable oil would be a good alternative...

He walked in the pub that evening, almost luminescent! Less beetroot, more 'ripe tomato'! We never let him forget that day.

GDay Jonny,

Jobsworth is probably cranking up the cooker/BBQ about now. I note it is 9.20am in London.

When I looked at the weather report above I was reminded of two things -

. A 1990 visit to Cardiff University, a Monday after  a summery Sunday, the whole lecture hall was beatroot red!  [smile]

. And more seriously, visited my Melanoma specialist last week for 6 monthly check up. (All is well by the way, Op, Nov 2012.)

He had just returned from a Conference in Edinburgh. When I said that would hardly be a problem there compared to here, he said specialists there are noting a big rise due to rising mean temperatures and the Cannery factor. "Cannery factor?" , said I.

Yes, holidays in the Cannery Islands, Spain and the Bahamas.    [eek]  [big grin]

Re the oil  there was a fad when I was as young as Tinker for using baby oil to moisten the skin when tanning. Theory was skin would not peel as quickly. Usually same result as your friend, and more  [eek]

Anyway have a great day, looking fwd to the pictures.
And slip, slop and slap guys.  [poke]

We can get Festool Green Zinc Cream down here. Seriously! Even our cricket team uses it!   [big grin]

PS My commiserations to Mrs Jobsworth, if she is brave enough to be there.

My passport did not arrive on time. [mad] Not sure if they'd let me back in if I left.

Isn't 75º a little warm, here that would be 167º. [eek]

Hope it's a great day for all.

I just wanted to say a massive   [thanks] to Ron for organising & hosting today. It was really good to meet all the other members, none of whom I'd met before. Very relaxed & informal, got to play with some new toys (including JMB's Protool chain Morticer (which is awesome, btw!)) and Phil came along from Festool with the edge bander and lots of other goodies too. He says that should be AINA shortly, so some good news for you guys! Got to see some interesting non-Festools too.

Big thanks also to Mrs Jobsworth who did a sterling job with the food!!!  [thumbs up]

Lastly thanks to Phil, who came along in his own time (not on Festool's dime) just because he's an awesome guy. [big grin]

I haven't got any pics to share, but I'm sure Ron will be posting some shortly.

Brilliant day, and already looking forward to the next one!

+1

Had a great time with some fantastic people and learnt a few things along the way too. Great of Ron to arrange, for Phil to join us in his own time, and for everyone to make the journey to Huntingdon. Thanks also to the weather, who remained just right all day long.

I tried to bring along a few non-Festool things that work well with the Festool system, so I can only offer my apologies to all the people who went away with a list of things to buy! The Jessem CLEAR-CUT Stock Guides went down a storm...  [big grin]

Big thanks also to Mrs Jobsworth who was beavering away all day looking after us and cooking the quite excellent food. Hope she likes the flowers Ron.

Roll on next year!

I mentioned Dieter Schmid's Fine Tools to a few people as a good source for Incra stuff (among other things). Looks like they now also stock the Jessem guides at a great price - works out at about £88 delivered. Unfortunately not in stock at the moment, but considerably cheaper than Rutlands.

I want to thank all that came.

I know some of you had a very long drive.

One guy is still on the road back to Edinburgh Scotland.

I didnt know exactly how this would turn out.

It was a first for me as Ive never done anything like this before.

What impressed me was that everyone brought something even if was enthusiasm which was awesome.

Its amazing that guys come from all over just to see and talk about tools and cars

Id like to thank Phil who took time away from his family to come and show us the new kit and answer questions helping some of us with are tools.

Id like to thank Festool for their generous bling they gave us, I never seen so many shirts and folding rules etc wow, It was like black friday at Walmart or for the English the Jan sales on Oxford Street  [thumbs up]

I didnt take as many photos as I expected to.

As we were all interested in the tools, and I was picking as many peoples brains as I could.

I did get some good ones though

Ill post them shortly

I gotta get me some of those jessum hold downs that Garry brought, those are slick.

Plus I gotta adjust my TS 75

JRBs radio systainer with the USB was plain awesome.

Thanks Guys for everything.

here a couple more,

Basically Jonny Round Boy, Showed us some pretty kewl kit. Aesome ladder that Im gonna have to get once I return to the colonies and he showed some cool adjustable spacers a friend of is invented to easily attach cabinets to walls jonny how us he systainer with the radio and usb adapter. Man I wish I was that cleaver and he showed his van how it was organized and how he organized his kit., garry martin showed us how he used a incra track, with qwas dogs on his MFT  ILO the festool fence he had a incra stop block and metric tape for accuratly cutting pieces to length,  garry had a pair of those jessum hold down rollers which we play with in my CMS. they impressed me so much I ordered a set for me today..
JMB showed us and let us play with his chain mortiser that thing scared the heck outta me but sort of turned me on at the same time  [censored]

Phil brought the edge banding kit and let us play with it. Man that is one nice bit of kit, Im telling ya. The wife saw it and gave me a" wow thats so cool honny" not knowing how much it cost hehehehe

Phil brought the cordless TSC55 and let us play with it to. It is very nice has all the power of the corded version. We were cutting through a thick counter top with it like a hot knife through butter,, plus he brought the SDS and PDC, and the dry wall screw gun. All very nice.

In my mind I had a few things to show the guys but after things got rolling I was the student learning  things and spending time talking to everyone. What I thought was great is everyone there was either a pro carpenter or advanced woodworker, so different then the crowd one would normally find at a road show or wood show.

I mean there was such a huge knowledge base it was well awesome.

But some downside, garry pointed out some adjustments I need to make so here I am in the shop spending some quiet time adjusting a couple of my tools. [big grin]

here are some more photos. Ill have to do this ins a couple of post a well they are to big and Im lazy and dont feel like reducing the size right now  [wink]

(Thanks also to Ron's great forward planning, I was able to schedule a couple of other visits into my trip, which helped.  Do you have a date in mind for 2015 yet...? )

Hi I have had some from 'ney' about 5 years ago and used it for some cabinet doors however I had to trim/fit them very slightly and that's when I discovered that it us actually made up of many layers of veneer which showed up when cut into its thickness. Is it the same now or is it actually 100% solid wood?

Not sure as never trimmed it but given its nature i would have thought anything on a spool will be made that way.

But if anyone is in the area please stop on by. Your always welcome .

Im passing right by you tomorrow afternoon on my way home from Cambridge , would be great to pop in for a coffee and a chat after missing Saturday due to work.  I was almost tempted to call this morning for breakfast , about 8 am ,  on my way to Cambridge  [big grin] , I was feeling peckish after being on the road since half 4 this morning

Well Mr Jobsworth, I was amazed at you and your family's hospitality. Thank you!! Too many conversations to have and not enough time. Really liked JMB's chain morticer and I must say that the edge bander wasn't so daunting up close. Also, I noticed when I got home that my new flat tape has got a pencil sharpener on it toooooooooo. How cool. Shame it's not in metric [tongue]
Joking aside, sign me up for next year!

And thanks again to you all!!!

The one I got is laminated
