And Now For Something Completely Different..........
« on: July 23, 2018, 09:40 PM »
Its the dog days of summer in the Southern CA desert.  Needed a change from flatwork,  playing with Systainers, organizing the "shop" and playing with Festools...............so it made sense to pull out the old lathe buried in the corner after a few years.

I watched Tim Yoder turn a rendition of Gary Lowe's "Cosmic Clouds Platter" and just had to give it a try.  It was great fun although my skills in turning, painting and finishing need MUCH improvement.  This was the result although only one Festool was used in the process (I used a T18 drill to  drill a pilot hole for the worm screw that held the blank on the lathe). Platter is Ambrosia beetle stained maple 300mm dia. x 50mm thick.

There, I'm done, now back to playing with Festools and MFT squaring. [smile]

Thanks folks!  The Jo Sonja iridescent paints were fun to experiment with.  They all appear milky white when first used and the colors and iridescence appear immediately when thinly applied to a dark background.

I wanted to try out my new RO90 to final sand the ogee profile on the backside, however I thought it might be too aggressive so I stuck with 2" power sanding disks.
