well just finishing up this 2 week project. one room we did a "L" shaped bookcase, then hung 4 french doors and transoms in 2 openings and then did these awesome built-ins along with a new mantel and above the mantel design and wired and hung tv..
these customers were a referral and gave me free rein to do what I want. so this is what I did. oak tops with curve on built ins... hand hewn mantel and then put 1x6 t&g 45 degrees and white washed it.. the walls in the living room were orange and friday my painter is going to paint it all tannish beige the color between the fireplace and built in. we also had to move a door that went into a closet under the stairs as it was in the way of the built in.. so moved it over 11"
that center wall design I think really sets off the room and adds to the entire package. I love this one !
all the curves were done with a bent 1/4" rip of pine and then free hand cut with my festool jigsaw and then an ogee design on the edge. stained then 4 coats of brush on laquer simple as that !

and here are the pictures of the hand hewn look mantel i made using the festool 850 planner and the undulating planner head.... they really come out awesome and the customers just go crazy over them it really adds an awesome touch, only here at Kreg's custom carpentry where the wow! factor comes with every job!

The tools in my truck were talking the other day. The Dewalts, PC's, Boschs, Makitas were not happy. They also were in the minority. Their complaint: They felt unused and unappreciated since the Festools moved in. I guess the truth hurts.

Is this the one you were going bonkers on in the "how to" planing video you put up the other day ? I'm really impressed with the finished product. The head on the planer gives the effect - but there's obviously a lot of experience gone into getting the texture balance just right. |

Love how the Festool 850 planner with the undulating planner head did the mantel. Not sure what they had before but what you build is great.
Coming from a photography and set building background I have to ask about the wood behind the TV.... what are you going to do with that? If that is not finished with at least less then 50% reflected light back to the viewer that could get a bit hard on the eyes when viewing especially at night.
But if the customer wants it when...never mind.

The head on the planer gives the effect - but there's obviously a lot of experience gone into getting the texture balance just right. no this is another one I just did, believe it or not I did in in about 1 hour ! I used a 1x11 oak and glued a 1x2" face on it to add depth. then grab planner and went nuts just like the video ! then I used my ro 90 and my ro 125 to sand out the divits smoother, and those I sand at an angle using the edge of the pad... then sanded with the sander flat going over entire surface.. then grabbed planner and went at it again top and edge sanded again looked and it and said it's done then stained 2 coats, laquer 2 coats, light 32o sand one more coat.. done deal over all actual time was 2 hours excluding wait time to dry... very easy to do.. this is number 10 or 11 I think of mantels and I am going to start doing more.. it only takes one or 2 to become an expert like me, (well not just like me ! lol) but close, as you need a bandana !! give it a shot it adds another tool to things you can do to blow away the competition ! time to Rock and Roll ! |

steve its done... its 1x6 t and g white washed stain with a coat of semi poly on it, thanks for the tip on the reflected light idea will check it out. I think it will be okay as not much is showing. before they just had a plane white mdf mantel top that this is just set up on and screwed into it from underneath... simple but adds the wow factor. people love this mantel and soon it will be starting to sweep the country, in fact FESTOOL should order a container of 850's and undulating heads for all the dealers to sell to cover the demand !   |

maybe if the domino xl works, then festool can come out with the 1150 planner... 3 times the size as the 850 and its would be like a jointer in your hand ! and can do the mantel in one swoop !

had to go back to this job today and do and remove plastic from 2 french doors small 18 with 10 lights each the plastic was put on at the factory so you can paint and then remove.... my as# 2 hours to knife it off! it was so glued on it was pitiful I used single edge razor, and a 4" wide razor... what a joke...
any way I took finished project pic with them all decorated up by customers and walls done... the other pic is the corner bookcase unit we also did at this job.
