Bottoms/tops inside or under/above cabinet sides?
« on: July 11, 2019, 08:32 PM »
I generally make cabinets with the bottoms and tops inside the sides, although when making cabinets, like Sysports, that have wheels, I generally make them with the sides above the bottoms and below the tops.  Is this what everyone else does?

@sandy - Yes, the sides rest on top of the bottom and so on as you suspect.
And your question is not the only one that makes this cart quite different than a regular cabinet. That's why there are 17 pages . . . in our plan set for a Systainer cart with all the details for $ 6.95 including a money back back guarantee [smile]

Common way of doing the fabrication(s).

The reason the sides run past on most cabinets is to conceal the edges of the plywood tops/bottoms.

Reason to set the tables on the bottom of wheeled cabinets is to transfer the loads better from wheels to gables.

Doesn't the 32mm system also dictate common placement of bottom and top captured between sides

Yes, which has always puzzled me since the entire load (including the contents of the cabinet and the counter top) is carried by the shear resistance of a few fasteners set into the end grain of (typically) particle board. Especially when the cabinet is standing on legs set only under the bottom panel.

And yet you seldom hear of IKEA cabinets collapsing. We also regularly hear that bacteria is everywhere, and yet we carry on...
