Router Plane w/rexroth linear rails
« on: October 22, 2018, 10:08 AM »
So recently at work we are decommissioning a machine that had several linear rails incorporated (35mm & 30mm).

As I got going on it, I figured out that it would mount to my parf bench (80mm hole spacing) and also the bolt size for the rails is 8mm 1.25, you know the same as my dogs. At this point I was just kind of laughing at my luck.

What I actually spent the most time on was mounting the router to the rails. My first version is pretty good, but I need to develop it further. I need to shorted or raise the dust brush. Also I'm using a piece of 18mm Ply, then use 10mm shims on the second axis mounts for different thickness boards.

Did a small test section last night (also first time using my amana 2250) and the results are pretty awesome. I captured 99.9% of dust with my rev 1 plate.

I would never purchase rails and bearing blocks for this (new cost would be around 8k) but its a nearly flawless router plane.

You are the lucky one!

That’s such a fine setup I’d encourage you to figure out how to mount a portable power plane on the saddle.

I'm jealous...what a gift.  [big grin]. The nice part is that they're pretty low profile.

Lol. I have had the opportunity to collect Linear rails as well. Problem is they are are MUCH bigger than those above. If I wanted to build a sawmill they would be about perfect.

Point of interest: There is a worldwide demand for linear rails that is creating serious lead time issues for various machine tools.

Its ridiculous. We are at upwards of 20-26 weeks for rails. THK, Schniebuger, INA, all of them...

If demand is that high, perhaps I should put them on the market.

Strike when the iron's hot. Go for it and may you have good fortune going forward!

Awesome build BTW (by the way)

Because of bit length (or lack of) I had to remove the dust boot from the bottom. I will need to find a way to add it back. results were 95% in a negative direction with it removed. It did catch the fine dust, but.......I did the first slab with the plane, total variance less than 2mm, I'll take it.
