Quick list of changes:

Dual core A5 processor
Front/Rear cameras
Thinner (8.8mm)
Lighter weight (1.3 vs. 1.5lbs)
Optional accessory for HDMI output @ 1080p
Same battery life
Same price
Available 3/11 in the US, 3/26 other countries

The new cover they introduced is pretty cool, check out the video on their site.

I think the slide in the presentation from Jobs said the processor results in 5x faster apps and 9x video performance over the original iPad.

Not sure this is a real iPad "2", more like an iPad 1.5.

Still no Flash support.

Not enough there to convince me to give up my Festool funds and replace my Android phone. That said, it is mighty tempting and slick looking.

Glad to see Steve Jobs made the announcement.

say what you want to say about apple.. but if they think something is at all a risk to your device they won't allow it on there. can something slip by? of course. but i like their watchful eye better then the other company out there. got my i mac over a year ago and have yet to even restart it, on my second iphone now with never an issue. and use ipad daily.

I'm definitely buying one.  Plus I'm happy to see iOS 4.3 will make the iPhone 4 a mobile hotspot, so I can get away with buying the non 3G version of the iPad 2.

I doubt Apple would be around today if not for Adobe applications in the '90s, primarily Photoshop and Illustrator.  OS X is head and shoulders above Windows 7 IMO, but back then there weren't many compelling reasons to run MacOS beyond Adobe.

You mean the ATT version you can have hotspots? with this software release? Do you then have to pay for tethering?

I just saw the vid on the apple site - that cover is one of the best examples of good product design I've seen in a long time. One of those "it's so simple, how can it work so well" kind of things. Genius.

Adobe was created with considerable funding from Apple and hardware developed for what became PostScript, which it then licensed back to Apple for exorbitant royalty fees.  Been a tenuous relationship ever since.  I kinda didn't like them after that.  Granted, Photoshop et al were hits.

Wow--it's like there's a tangible benefit for somebody controlling quality in a whole system. I wonder where I could go to find people that believe in paying more for a system approach to making life easier/safer... any thoughts anybody?

I'll pass on the xoom, I already have one android based phone that glitches out 24/7. Ive had my iPad for about a year now and use it everyday, yet I would not know. How to deal with a problem because I've never had one, to be honest I'm not quite sure how to turn this thing off o well I'll figure it out when I pick up the iPad 1.75

Laughable really. Personally I'm not sold on the use of a tablet and in particular the Ipad. This release adds a bit of fluff to their previous version while still ignoring usability. How about a usb port? is there some sort of security risk with that? Better screen resolution? Oh wait you get viruses with high rez screens. True multi tasking?? Too much of a risk.

This whole Flash is too risky nonsense is just rubbish. My Imac runs Flash, where's the problem there?? Oh ya so does my Android which runs glitch free.

Nice/smart design on the cover though really impressive, too bad the device itself wasn't as well thought out.

Considering they invented the category, let's give them a bit of credit.

You wouldn't even have an Android phone to praise had they not created the iphone.

Have you tried one?  They're pretty darn cool.  No worries if you didn't care for it - everyone else in your house would be fighting to use it I'd bet.

Don't have one myself, but have used others.

I picked up the iPad when they were first released. My initial reason was to help with photo presentations on estimates. I already know that I'm good at what I do, but if I can help portray that to a potential client, I'll invest into a device that could only potentially help get work!

Having had the iPad for almost 1 year, that is my go to device. I don't find much need for flash at all...most sites are converting to HTML5 anyway, plus there are third party browser apps that can convert some/most flash (Skyfire IIRC). The battery life far supersedes my MacBook Pro and I can take it with me anywhere. I can also tether to my iPhone since I only went the wifi option.

I use the iPad to put estimates and invoices together, email, browse FOG and just about everything else my MacBook can do.

I would highly recommend the iPad to anybody looking for portability with a lot of common computer functionality!

Without a doubt Apple put the smart phone industry where it is today. They also made this new fangled tablet craze. However in both categories I feel they offer less of a product when put up against their competitors. I mean even the forth coming Blackberry tablet uses Flash and can multitask properly.

Apple makes very well packaged sleek looking devices. Their design team is top notch and probably the best in the industry it's the inside parts that fall short not to mention their wacked out decisions to exclude industry standard features.

all my apple products multi task just fine, and i can shoot stream and airplay music anywhere in my house or workshop wirelessly right from the palm of my hand. i have not found not having flash on any of my ios devices a disservice at all. mobile me is great too.

the other devices might have some more features but they are nonsense features to me.

Ghost, it is my understanding from all of the rumormills on the web that they decided to forego flash because it's a battery hog and found quite frequently in pop up ads as well. Having said that, I know there are a lot of sites that use flash for video. The only one that bums me out is Fine Homebuilding.

I know that Apple is very cult-ish, but I do like the security of their "primarily" closed system and I'm willing to sacrifice a few features that are not major necessities for me!

you are correct Bob reguarding flash. That is the was the reason apple gave for not using flash. if it is the truth i do not know. i think it is because apple has something better up it's sleeve that websites will soon have to adapt to, many websites are already designing their websites around flash for the simple reason that they are not viewable on apple ois devices.. soon it will be even less of an issue with people

Flash isn't even my main gripe with apple, it's just an example of their stubbornness. how about the ability to change a battery? Upgrade memory? Or connect with what the rest of the world sees as standard. Again nice package, lacking substance.

Oh, wow, I guess I missed it... Maybe I can make amends if I camp out in front of the local Apple Store three weeks before they go on sale.... [wink] Gotta get one, gotta be first in line, Steve says it's the greatest thing since sliced bread!  [huh]

If you want to know where the iPad is going read up on the history of the iPhone.

Jobs/Apple have become so typical in product releases it's boring: Release a half-finished product, hype it to the moon, make a ton of money on it and use a tiny fraction of that to finance R&D on the next generation. Rinse and repeat a couple of times until you finally manage to bring to market a product that's actually worth what you've been charging for it all along. In the meantime The Faithful and those dumb enough to fall for the marketing hype will have made you a billionaire many times over by buying each and every unfinished product you've hyped along the way....

I've always thought Jobs was a genius, I'm just not a big fan of his business model.

BTW, Bill Gates announced the "tablet" in 2001. And it ran on Windows. They never caught on with the general public but they've been popular in the business community ever since.

Bill

BTW, nVidea has already released samples of their quad-core ARM processor. So much for the dual-core A5 thing....

Funny thing Adobe is working in a converter from Flash to HTML5 [big grin]

I am a software engineer working with Unix, Oracle and Windows.  My current client provided a laptop with extreme security that prevents me to do many things that I used to do.  I normally travel with my own laptop, but I didn't want to carry 2 laptops, so I traveled with client laptop and my Ipad. The ipad allowed to do everything that Ido normally.

That was the best test, not having the laptop forced me to use the ipad at full potential.  No USB, Well, I have dropbox to have access to my files, Ihave ms office apps, remote connect to my laptop.

Idon't know about the rest of the world standards, there is none in web development, unless we talked about HTML, there is always 2 or more ways to do the same thing.

There is never a situation where it can't be done with the right hand tool - even though it may be a lot more work.

Sounds like Festool with the MFT1080.  Or a $800 contractor's wheeled mitersaw station that doesn't allow crown moulding stops??

Seriously though, all the complaints about apple are the same shortcomings you all accept with open wallets from Festool.

Poor guy gets beat up by everyone because he knows how to corner the tech market and make a profit.

Let's go drag him out of his house and lynch him.  I will supply the flaming torches.

Last time I checked, Apple does not hold a gun to anyone's head forcing them to buy their products.

Good grief.
