Hello Everyone

My children bought me the OF1400 for Christmas and I then bought the Guide Ring Adapter and the right sized guide ring to use with my Leigh dovetail jig. I then discovered that Axminster Power Tools were selling a set of guide bushes, made by UJK Technology, that would fit the adapter for the OF1400. So, I bought a set and also got the Axminster Hole and Corner template. I am sure these things will be available elsewhere around the world.

Anyway, I had to make a 43mm hole in a piece of MDF for someone and decided to use the new gear for the first time and video the process.

Take a look at:

I have bought a lot of tools from Axminster and have always had great advice from their technical people (just ring the free phone number and ask for 'technical' support). I was not sure about the guide bush set and spoke to them before placing my order online. I do a lot of research before buying most things (sad really!) but it does avoid a lot of heartache later. I was quite prepared to buy all of the Festool copying rings for the OF1400 but discovered these just in time.

Yes I had seen a few imperial sets on US websites, but these looked pretty good. I am now looking forward to them bringing out some metric set-up blocks.. that would be handy!

I was wondering if I would find these two sets useful and created this Excel spreadsheet to calculate all of the possible hole sizes you can create with all of the combinations and permutations of the Axminster template and UJK guide bushing set. Its nothing very sophisticated - just enter your router cutter diameter in cell C2 and the internal diameter of the routed hole appears in column D.

Thanks Peter. I am glad you reviewed these products as I would never have found them otherwise. Its incredible how many different sizes of hole you can get with just one size of cutter!

Yes, the sizes of the bushes are well thought out.

Too heavy for you to take back to the US - unless they let you borrow a C141 !

Hello Peter,

I had the OF 1400 already, I had to do some accurate holes and was wondering how to tackle it when your video came along just at the right moment... I bought everything and it worked a treat.

I have a few projects in mind, in the future, where this technique will be used over and over.

You are going to have to stop doing these reviews though, it is starting to cost me a lot of money! Nearly everything you have reviewed has ended up on my doorstep...

I am so pleased that everything has worked out as it should.

I cannot promise to stop doing reviews - perhaps I should put a health warning at the start "Warning - This video may damage your wallet ! "

Peter, great review and thanks for in introducing this setup. I have been looking for a means of making precise metric holes for a while, I am going to arrange to "import" a set of the bushings and the guide template.

To answer my own question as to what holes the setup would make I expanded on Cliff's work and made a table of all possible holes with 4/6/8/10/12/14/16mm bits. I think I have the formula correct as D = T-((G-C)/2) when:

T = template hole diameter
G = guide bushing diameter
C = cutter diameter
D = Finished hole diameter

I assumed the bushing wall was +/- 2mm thick so any bit needs to be 4mm smaller than the bushing to fit inside, any combinations that would not work are shown as N/A. It appears that you can route any hole from 20-82mm with this setup, and nearly all of them with a 6mm bit.

93083-0

93085-1

The table is available at http://www.ripdogs.com/downloads/metric-router-template-guide-table/

Thanks again for posting the video!

I take the opportunity to offer thanks to both Richard and to Peter for your excellent works.

I am in the process of setting up my new workshop and have found your videos great to watch Peter... cost me a packet so far but hey, there are no pockets in a shroud! [smile]

Richard, Subsequent to watching one of Peter's videos (YouTube) I went out and purchased a set of the UJK bushes and the router guide also.  Your table has saved me a lot of work and it will be pasted inside the the router cupboard door in the workshop.

Best regards

Jeff

Please test the table calcs on scrap first, I think the formula is correct but I don't have the bushings/template myself yet so have not tested it.

Hi Richard,

I will run some samples as soon as I can settle in the workshop and start to enjoy myself.   I am clearing a few essential jobs around the home and cannot settle until these are done.  I will mail you the results!

Re the UJK stocks in general, including the guide bush set... There seems to be a shortage of supplies here in the UK.  I have spent a fair bit of time scanning the internet to find various pieces of UJK equipment, Router table, Cast iron top, dust cabinet for the router and ancillary items as in Peters video.  The only piece I have been able to obtain so far is the router lift; further stocks of some items are not going to be available until the end of January 2014.  UJK equipment is made to a pretty good standard and it seems a pity that their stock is not available.  The nearest match to the UJK router table, the 'Excalibur 40-200p' is featured in the latest copy of Fine Woodworking 'Tools and Shops'

The perspex template is available here in the UK, I noticed my nearest 'Axminster' store had several in stock when I visited them last Friday.

Best regards

Jeff

Hi Richard

The formula is:

D=T-G+C

for the diameter of a hole cut on the inside of a template.

@Richard/RMW & @Peter Parfitt,

Is the content of this thread still accurate?  I see the circle template is no longer available from Axminster but the guide bushes are.

@Richard/RMW, is the chart you produced the amended version or is it still the wrong version?

I am about to order the guide bushes and would like to print this chart off.

Thank you both.  It may be 4 years old but the content is still very helpful.

I keep telling Axminster to stock that template again but I think the manufacturer has gone bust.

The guide bushes are still available and I mentioned them again in a very recent video. I use them a lot.

I also wanted to purchase the hole template recently but found it was unavailable.
Even if the original manufacturer has gone bust surely it wouldn't be at all difficult for Axminster to find a new supplier to CNC them on limited manufacturing runs. Its not like Holes of specific mm diameters could be patented LOL

But i would 100% purchase one if Axminster stocked them again, they would be very useful on occasions.
