Cabinet Design Software for DIY CNC Guy
« on: February 21, 2018, 12:27 PM »
To set context - I build my own cabinets (vanities, kitchen, built-ins, etc).  I’m pure DIY, no time in life for hire.  Tools for cabinet building are not a limitation, I’m set.  CNC-router-wise, I’m looking for a smaller machine like a Pro Series in a size 4x4 or smaller (space isn’t copious).  Want to figure out the software capabilities before I commit to a machine.

What I want to do - today I’m comfortable with my cabinet building processes but I’m growing tired of switching operations.  I’d like to drop a “blank” in a CNC router and have it cut the dado’s for the back panels, cross braces, domino slots, and shelf pin holes in one op.  Same goes (double) for drawers.  CNC will be useful for many other things too.

I can stumble my way through building cad files to cut these parts but I’m curious if there’s some software out there that (affordably) can turn a cabinet design into cut/g-code files?  I think the cost would have to be less than $1k for it to make sense for the home/diy guy but I’m open to +\-.  I’d like

Any suggestions that align?

Have a look at.

You can trial the pro version for $100 for 3 months with full CNC output, most CNC cabinet software runs on full 8x4 sheets for nesting, my recommendation would be an 8x4 machine otherwise you will have to cut the panels oversize and then
re-machine individual panels.

The other option would be to look at Vectric V carvePro, this has the option of Toolpath tiling that splits the tool path to suit material or machine size.

Have you looked at Fusion 360 from Autodesk?  Free license for makers who earn less than $100K annually from what they make.  It's very robust for design, CAM, sheet metal, rendering and even sculpting.  Huge following and a wealth of youtube videos from Autodesk as well as others.

It will easily do what you want to do.

Cabinet Planner $69.95. Has a 10 run time trial, it's updated frequently, and the author is very responsive. By no means is it the most polished program out there, but it will do what you are wanting to do if you are willing to spend some time working with it. It’s very configurable. I own it and have built with it on my cnc. Purchased it because of its price point and capabilities.
