Deep throat clamps
« on: May 22, 2017, 08:07 AM »
I have an install coming up where I will be tying some base cabinets together -- the challenge however will be that the center cabinet is inset 3 3/4" back from the side units, and so I just in case I wanted to bring some clamps that will be able to bring together the side of the center unit and the side of the side units when I screw them together.  This offset is too deep for a Bessey Revo clamp to be effective, whose max throat depth is exactly 3 3/4".  I suppose I could go with an xtra large C-Clamp, or the Bessey F-Clamp with the 7" throat: http://www.rockler.com/bessey-tg-professional-series-bar-clamps

But I was wondering if there was a more delicate, deep throat clamp on the market suitable for cabinet work, preferably trigger style with large pads that won't dent the wood?

A wooden hand screw clamp in 10 or 12 inches will give you the depth

You could also look at the deep reach Kreg auto maxx clamps or the Irwin Vise grip style deep reach clamps. Both can be fitted with pads.

Do you have a wall on each side you could use for support?  If so, use some 2x4's for extensions and reorient some trigger style clamps as spreaders between the wall and the cabinet sides.

I do keep a pair of the 7" TG Besseys around though.  Every now and again they come in handy.

I have a pair of the Bessey TG20 clamps just in case. You can use a spreader block if you need to be a bit careful. The clamps are quite heavy so they might not suit really delicate applications.

I show one in use at about the 9 minute point in this video:

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I like the cam clamp or wooden screw clamp idea. Cabinets will be in cente r of wall, so I won't have corner to work off of.
