Someone has just brought this to my attention: NWS Slip-Joint Pliers, also made in Germany.

I Googled and found this:

Knipex also makes a ratcheting pliers wrench that I've grown quite fond of.  Smooth wrench jaws that don't mark up the surface of whatever you're working on.  I've been using a friend's pair, but am hoping that Santa leaves one under my Christmas tree [big grin]

I Googled and found this:

Interesting. Very clone like. It is a toss up on the thickness. Depends on the steel quality as to which is stronger. But Knipex uses good steel so I think I prefer the thinner  for better access.

Also Knipex makes a quick set version in the 250 size. That slides closed like the NWS.

These are great! Cut hard wire up to 4mm. Mild steel up to 5.2mm with a very compact tool.

Yeah, the Pliers - Wrench is nice too!  They have recently added a bent/ angled/ offset version to the line.

Thanks to this post and @ChuckM , I was at Menards last night and just had to pick up a pair of these. I especially like the thin jaws  [thumbs up] and the self locking feature.  [cool]

The jaws are less than 1/4" thick, .235" actually.

I already have several of their wire cutters so this was an easy decision.

I have had a pair of the Knipex slip joint (If you can call them that, since they lock?) pliers since around 1997. They were used almost daily and are still my go to pliers. Barely any wear on the teeth, nor the soft grip handles, which shows how high of quality the steel is. On par with Snap-on, which I rarely will offer as a comparison.

I agree with you Michael Kellog!  I love these little cutters.  Just used them this morning to cut some little bolts...

NWS do some very nice compound action end cutters, great for snipping nails upto about Paslode framing nail thickness (3.1 mm if I remember right)
Also VBW make some pliers and snips of excellent quality.
Both German companies if that makes any difference.
