Kreg Beaded Face Frame
« on: July 13, 2017, 04:00 PM »
I'm scoping a job that will involve doing some custom moulding profiles and building a grid on a wall with that trim.  Sort of like wainscotting, but my impression is that the moulding profile is a bit more complicated, and therefore would be more difficult to cope (I'm getting some pictures of the desired profile in the next couple of days so I'll be able to confirm).  So that leaves doing jack miter joints as my one option I believe.

I'm wondering if anyone has used the Kreg Beaded Face Frame system for this sort of work, i.e., for creating the notches in profiles more complicated than a beaded face frame?  I've wanted to get one for a while, but haven't really had cause to do so.  There would also be a question of what is the max length of stile that the Kreg system can handle.  I think the grid is only indicated for a portion of the upper wall, but I'm not sure yet how long the stiles would have to be.

Wouldn't this bit set from Whiteside perform the function required?

Thanks...but I believe that set is only for beaded paneling.  I'm just doing a moulding frame on the wall -- the wall panel already there will be left as is.  I need to make the notch joints so that the rails can be fitted to the stiles in the middle of the frame.

I have played with it a little at shows, but never got around to purchasing.  The final product looks great.

I have been at this game for a long time including working in a woodworking store.  It would always have been special order.  I have never run into anyone who actually owned it or was even considering purchasing.

If the job has  scale and you can  justify it, I think you will be delited.  Make sure you can return if dissatisfied.   I realize this is a one-time purchase for almost any woodworker, so stores aren't wild to devoting floor space to it.

I hope you report back here on your results if you get it.

I don't think the Kreg will do anything except beaded face frames.  Meaning it won't work on other moldings.

I could very well be mistaken though.  [unsure]

That kreg beaded face frame system looks nice (I watched a couple of youtube videos).
I think it also depends on the depth of the moulding if the system would work for your needs.

I also remembered an article by Gary Katz about jackmiters with a jig for the router (without routertable) :

This should answer a lot of your concerns, great for jack mitres and the length doesn't matter.

I know 2 people who own the Kreg beaded face frame system. I've used it, it works very well.

@Edward A Reno III  - are you using flat stock to make boxes and then trim with the "custom molding profile" ?

Or , is the profile itself being used to make the box/panel ? Does it have a flat near the inside edge ?

Profile itself will be used, otherwise I could simply miter some inset moulding.  Still waiting for some pics of the profile, which should be coming later this morning.  I'm actually cleaning up the work of another contractor who didn't do so well, and so the client wants it redone.

I'm still failing to visualize how that will help making wainscotting like panels out of a profiled trim piece ?  It's only useful for notching the flat and square stock - which may be part of your design.  Hard to tell from the description.

I just mean the moulding frames/grid pattern that overlays the panels.  I resorted to using the wainscotting terminology because that was my previous experience with fitting moulding profiles at 90 degree angles using a coping cut.  But you're right, it's not wainscotting.

The Kreg BFF system does not impose a limit on length of either rail or stile (the limitation is your own stock management ability for operations similar to crosscutting on a table saw), but it is only suitable for flat profile stock with nothing more than bead, chamfer, or edge-only treatments.
