Kreg track compatible with Festool saws?
« on: February 02, 2019, 01:23 PM »
Love the new table they just introduced. Anyone know if
1.  The kreg tracks are compatible with Festool saws?
2.  If the table hardware is compatible with festool tracks?

The Kreg dogs are 3/4" diameter, at least according to their website. I couldn't find anything that gave the hole spacing of the grid on the table top. They have the table top listed as a separate item for $149 IIRC, but I would assume the holes are 3/4" t match their dogs.

It's a table saw, do you know where your fingers are?

That's too bad.  I wonder if the table hardware will work with festool tracks.  I emailed them and asked.

I'm guessing the 3/4" holes are spaced 100 mm O/C ... the same as their Mobile Project Center ..

Where do you see that? The description does not say anything. Looks identical to Festool track.

I'd be curious to see if you could attach a festool track to this system,  I kinda like how long the table is , and the price is decent?

No, the kreg tracks left handed.  [big grin]

It was a question and answer on one of the items.  I don't recall which one but the Toolnut rep answered it wasnt.

The original question was never really answered by an official source. Does a Festool saw slide up and down the Kreg track?  I sure hope so.

I rather like this saw, particularly that the blade is on the left of the saw.  This makes it easier for right handed people to see the cut, and to hold the saw when cutting parallel to the front of a bench from right to left.

I also like the built-in kickback lock.

It seems they've put some thought into this product.

Here's something from Toolnut. And I had asked Kreg about the usability of the entire top in reference to cutting.

I though the same thing. They are not in stock, Toolnut employee have not seen it. It would be odd to make a rail which looks exactly like Festool and make it incompatible.

If Kreg had the core objective to get the market to accept its track saws and not just its tracks, it certainly would want to design its tracks to be incompatible. Its sales strategy. in other words, could be to promote the whole system (saw, track & table), rather than to just offer a track alternative to other track saw owners. So it is a choice between Kreg and others, to a potential buyer.

In that case why replicate Festool design instead of improving on it. And there are many ways to improve: self aligning connectors and two clamp slots on the bottom (Mafell/Bosch), side facing (or dual) t-slot on the edge, etc. All well known wish list issues.

Replicate? I see a lot of differences between them. Some even thought the Kreg looks more like the Mafell.

From what I have read here the only reason for any interest in the Kreg rail system is because it must be cheaper than Festool's. While it would seem like an obvious decision to make their stuff compatible with others, it was not their goal or they would have 20mm holes in their cutting table. Kreg's goal is probably to undercut the market with a less expensive track saw and I suspect they have other tools in the works that use their track. Different means locked in. I also think their customer base is different and they have a much larger retail footprint than Festool does.

Here is a response from Kreg tech support:

"The Kreg® Plunge Saw is designed to work with the Kreg® 62" Guide Track, and has not been designed to work with tracks from other manufacturers. While it may be possible, Kreg makes no such claims, and does not recommend using the Plunge Saw with the tracks from other manufacturers."

Translating from Legalese to plain talk it's the same track as Festool or Makita.

You are probably thinking about KMA Accu-Cut track, which is quite different.
The Adaptive Cutting System Track is the same:

The spacing where the track connectors go on Makita tracks seem closer together than on the Kreg track.  Roughly they make up 1/3 the track.  Maybe it’s the photos but the Kreg looks more than that.  Looking at Kreg it looks like there is room for two glide strips between extrusions, where Makita and Festool is basically one.  Could be the pictures.  Maybe the Makita or Festool saw will work on rail but blade will not line up with splinter guard but be offset outside of it.

Ah. We were not talking about the same thing: you the track, me the saw and table or the whole system.

I think you are right. Too bad for Kreg. To make a unique track and not learn a thing from other tracks shortcomings.

Thank you for your support and feedback.  I'm sorry to say we weren't able to design our system for compatibility with other companies' systems.  So, it's unlikely that you would be able to make them work together.
Please let us know if any further questions or concerns arise.  Have a good one!

That sounds like we made it the same but can't say so.
