Quality cordless hand drill press
« on: April 23, 2018, 05:30 PM »
Does anyone make a Festool quality drill press guide to work with a hand drill? I tried one and it’s junk, looks like the build quality on other ones is similar

@treesner - I suggest that you review the following thread from beginning to end. In addition to the earliest posts, there has been some recent activity, all of which should interest you:

I have the mafell drill stand. The price is hard to swallow but it’s the best on the market by far.

Why not just find a used drill press from Craigslist? Even a cost effective one from Harbor Freight will work better than those cheesy jigs. Plus a drill press can accept a vise, and clamps, like the Automaxx clamps.

A drill press will not work in every situation. These "cheesy jigs" can be your best option sometimes.

Because a drill press is an entirely different kind of tool for an entirely different set of circumstances.

The most obvious tasks for which a drill press is of no use, are drilling into the centre of a large panel, into an already partly-constructed piece, or into a vertical surface.

What I use my drilling jig for mostly is handrails to accept metal spindles. Can’t really drill on an angle with a drill press on a 16’ length of handrail.

Some time back bought a Duss drill stand to use with a Metabo dual mode hammer drill. (Bought it used from a local fog member)

Took it to a work site where I’d be drilling finished holes in white oak with a 2-1/2” Forster bit. Was nervous about using the Duss/Metabo for the first time on something important so I was relieved to discover the complex had a shop and “one of those cheap drill presses from Harbor Freight”. (Don’t really know where it was from)

The cheap DP could barely turn the big bit even in low gear when in contact with the wood.

The Duss/Metabo on the other hand was awesome. Even with the drill clamp swung to the side so the Duss could sit on the work the very rigid construction of the stand and powerful drill made the job stress-free.

I sorta ran into the same need so at first I used a drill press and turned a block of wood into a guide but over time the hole gets real sloppy so I found bushings to make my guide out of. worked great

I have also used these in a pinch (they sell different sizes):

If we're talking about a closed bottom drill stand (think mini drill press) the best value drill stand is a Wabeco. They're made in Germany and the options and prices can't be touched by anyone else. Steel posts with cast iron bases and mounting ears.

This is only $68.   [jawdrop]

This is only $160.

While this with a 2-axis table, positionable in .1mm increments, is only $302.

I don't own one but if I needed one, Wabeco is the first place I'd research.

Just ran across this spring Promotion

The Wabeco looks neat.  Does it work well?  I guess it's designed to work with a corded drill that has a trigger that can be locked on.

I prefer Proxxon BFB 2000. Proper dovetail slide mechanism and ability to drill at an angle.

I agree, the Proxxon unit is real nice, however it runs about $300.

I was coming strictly from the value perspective aspect as the small Wabeco, with only a down plunge function costs $70.

There are a lot of down plunge only units out there from Metabo, Bosch, Record and BDS. However, they all run in the $190-$450 range.

And then there’s the Duss in the $600-$750 range.

My problem with Wabeco is that they don't ship to US (directly from the company). Re-sellers bring the price up considerably.

You’re right, they only ship within the EU. However Amazon.de does resell their products for pretty close to the same price.

The last item I ordered from Amazon.de was a Festool PowerSys that I received in just 4 days.  [cool]

Found a German online retailer with more "normal" pricing that's set up to ship Wabeco stands to the U.S.:

Sweet...thanks for that. The variety of versions that Wabeco offers is mind numbing. I’m still thinking seriously about their 2-axis table.

The trash we’re offered in the states is horrendous. A 2-axis table with .005-.010” backlash for $230 is insulting. However if enough fools purchase the item, they’ll continue to hawk it.  [mad]

So who’s the fool...

Thanks for the suggestion @Gregor , that's exactly what I did. I thought they may have a US distributor, however they don't. They just channeled my request through an internal group and Wabeco will ship it from Germany directly to me.

Interestingly enough, the normal price for the 2-axis K600 table is €224.00, while the current sale price is €140.00. I was quoted a price of €117.00.  That's pretty close to 50% off the regular price.  [eek]

The only kicker is freight, that costs €80.00.

Yea, sending stuff over the pond by plane is quite expensive...
