Super short driver bits.
« on: January 25, 2018, 12:05 AM »
I came across extra short 1/4" driver bits. They are from Snap On. And they have a set of them available. I got a T15 just to try out.  Fits into the Wera Mini Zyklop perfectly (actually snaps in place).  Some of the bits in the set have a higher shoulder so I am not sure all of them will lock into the Wera.  Total height in the Wera is 11/16" compared to a 1" bit at 1 1/16".  See pictures for comparison to 1" bits. And also shaves a little off the right angle if you need just a bit more room to fit somewhere.

Good tip Seth!

How do you but them from Snap On? Their web site sucks.
"1/4" Hex Shank" is not an allowable search term even though it's in the title of the closest thing I could find.

Good find Seth...sometimes you need that little extra room. I find myself sometimes installing electrical boxes through the sidewall of the box rather than using the metal ears...the ears do add a lot of flex for certain installations. It's difficult to get a screw, regular length driver bit, 1/4" hex socket and ratchet wrench in the limited space at the same time.   [eek]

Michael, if you don't know your local Snap-On dealer,   [jawdrop]   go to the Snap-on website and click on the "Find a franchisee" and tell them you're a mechanic with your own shop. They'll give you the name of the franchise owners in your area. I've done this for over 50 years.  [big grin]

Their website has always been an afterthought, even after the overhaul a few years ago.  Everything is organized in a hierarchical fashion.

Go to Hand tools...Screwdrivers.  Then scroll down the list and look for Bits/Hex Shank.  I think you'll find it somewhere in there.

You could probably just cut the shank of a regular bit in half to obtain a super short bit. And yes, I don't do simple.

The link in my post will take you to the page for the set. On that page click "sets/members" tab. Then you can click individual bits and put them into the cart.

I did a little searching but haven't found any other source for the short length.

I have used the 1" bits in the Wera a few times where it fit and worked in the space. But a little extra would have been easier. Especially when trying to get a finger on the back side of the ratchet as well. Also will allow for a little longer screw.
