Vac-sys clamp with non Festool pump
« on: October 12, 2018, 10:59 AM »
Can the clamps be used with an non Festool clamp?  I have a vac-u-clamp pump and was wondering if I could use it.  Any special fittings needed?  If so, what and where can I get them.  Thanks

Yes.  I've used the clamp successfully with a small Joe WW DIY pump and a larger Excel 5 pump, as well as the Festool.

You need this fitting:  Parker RF-254-4MP
Current systainer to productivity ratio:  very high

I have done it with my Air Press vacuum pump - works great.

I've been using a surplus HVAC pump that I paid $15.00 for the last twenty years.  It's worked with self made jigs, a pair of Virutex and now my pair of Festools.  Vacuum is vacuum no matter how generated.  Most portable pumps will not generate enough vacuum to harm your jigs.  The only consideration is the material being sucked down.  heck, I originally used my Sears vac and air compressor inlet to work my original jigs 30 years ago.

I've been using my Vac-Sys with a Milwaukee (Gast) vacuum pump off of a core drill. I opted to incorporate Festo fittings.

Those Festool QR fittings (plastic) are nice to use...but they cost £50 vs £15 for generic (all metal) ones, so I went cheap.

Incidentally, these hose clamps are nicer than the screw fitting type you have used https://racebikebitz.com/hose-clamp-clips-fittings-universal-heavy-duty-pressure/double-ear-o-clips-zinc-plated-w1-mild-steel/double-ear-o-clips-304-stainless-steel-w4-o-clamps you need the 14-17mm size for the Festool hose (not sure how that translates to available imperial sizes)

Cheers

The hose clamps are called Oetiker's. They are commonly used on fuel lines, such as the crossover on my motorcycle, or for those lines used for soda machines. There are special pincers designed to crimp them. The clamps have a very narrow range for their application. The size is stamped on the clamp side. I found the best price on eBay when I needed them last.

I just used some ordinary pincers - you crimp one side fully, then the other - works fine.  This is not a critical application - if I was crimping fuel pipes on a motorbike, I would buy the correct pincers not do it myself...

cheers

That worm gear clamp you see was originally an Oetiker ear clamp. A while back, something was accidentally sucked up by the pump so I had to remove the quick disconnect. I left it like that thinking if it could happen once, it'll probably happen again.  [big grin]  The rest of the clamps are Oetiker ear clamps.
