Woodpecker bevel squares - latest OTT
« on: July 03, 2018, 10:10 AM »
Looks like Woodpecker is reviving this one.  Can anyone comment on how they compare to the Shinwa?

I have a Veritas cam-locking square that I love, but they have been discontinued.  I also have a Shinwa, which has the same type of mechanism as the Woodpecker.

Love them...I purchased both sizes along with the reference plate. I believe the lines are in 1/4º increments.

I was looking for a good bevel square because the 3 ones that I had were all difficult to use. One was a Crown and no matter how much you tightened it the blade would still move. The other 2 looked like they'd work better but they were also junk because you had this small knurled screw to try to tighten. I gave all of them away...good riddance.

The Woodpeckers items are a pleasure to use. They lock up tight without having to crank down on them. Also the sliding barbell adjuster allows you to get into tight spaces and still be able to solidly lock up the blade.

My plan was to not hesitate on the next Woodpeckers sliding bevel "reissue".
However, the new Harvey Industries made Bridge City tool line has hit the market, and.....

The Bridge City tool is certainly more beautiful and versatile but the locking method of the Woodpecker tool is superior.

Truthfully as nifty as all these primo bevel squares are, I really just wish LV would bring back theirs.  Feel so dumb for not getting one while it was available.

I'm interested in this OTT, can anyone tell me a time where the smaller would work better than the larger? Just easier to handle/store?

I have a bunch of woodpecker stuff and really like it. I think its well made and works well.
I won't be ordering this square even though I'd really like to. Just too much money for a square. Will probably buy the BC

Although I missed out on the initial offering, after calling Woodpeckers HQ I was able to pick up the larger one last year.  I have found, however, that in a lot of cases it is overkill for my applications, so I just placed and order to get the smaller one and the reference plate.

As an example, if I've used the small one 100 times, then the large one has probably been used 10 times. As Edward posted, the large one is overkill for most things.

However, I was doing some tread work and by using both sizes, I was able to get both LH & RH tread end profiles at the same time and then transfer those to the new tread. It just sped up the process.

Wait until it shows up on your doorstep. You’ll be chuffed.  [big grin]

I consider this Woodpecker tool to be the best of the lot.

I am not sure what the price would be in the USA (the exchange rate for the AUD is in your favour), but the very best sliding bevel is made by Chris Vesper (Vesper Tools) ...

These lock down, and stay locked down. Adjustments are smooth ... and they look good.
