While staying by the River Severn in Gloucestershire we had some visitors, nervous little things.
Goldfinches (Carduelis carduelis). Photo's taken through the plexiglas lounge window of our motorhome on an overcast afternoon, as they ate the seeds from the thistles, expertly separating the tiny seed from the down that aids the seeds spread when caught in the wind. Hope you like them.

Thanks for looking, Rob.

I agree!  It is amazing how agile finches are.  OuR gold finches are much louder in appearance - go figure!

Thanks guys.

Peter, the American Goldfinch is Cardualis tristis, a cousin, perhaps, of the ones above. Quite a striking little guy too.....

Picture from a google image search. No bright flash of red around his head though.

Great pictures!  Just starting to get into bird watching, and its almost time for Painted Buntings to arrive or do whatever it is they do, making season?  June in South Carolina.

Once again, great pictures and thanks for sharing.

Peter, I'm guessing that the birds Rob took pictures of are also NAINA, awaiting U.L. approval?

Ken,

I think that all U.L. questions are supposed to go to Rick Bush.   Poke  My guess is that the commute would be a killer for the little guys.

Very cool. I can never get a good picture of the hawks around here, somehow they know when I'm going to get my camera.

I was eating breakfast and did not see the hawk. My wife walks out a yells LOOK LOOK, then I saw the hawk. I was just eating and reading the paper.

Maybe if you put your video camera on the balcony, put on a straw hat with overalls and stand very still with outstretched arms, you'll get your birds.  Big Grin

Peter,

I think the video cut off early.  There's supposed to be the part where he opens his mouth for the birds to drink.

Brice's luck, he'll get a bunch of woodpeckers and .... let the fun begin  Scared.

 Big Grin Great pic Greg.
But I'll have to call you an

European Eagle Owl
 and raise you a

Snowy Owl  Grin Grin

Bit of a cheat as both were taken during a visit to the Owl Centre in Campbeltown, Scotland. They rescue these great birds and try to educate people about them. Well worth a visit if ever you are visiting.

This week the swallows have returned to the farmyard where my workshop is and this thread reminded me of this little bunch of critters who hatched in my timber store last year.

Great to have them around but man you wouldnt believe the amount of poop on my oak stock!!!! Scared

Here is one of a dove in her nest out side my office door (taken last July). She returned this year, and started building her nest. then a day or so later it was some how destroyed and the dove never came back.

In the second photo is mommy dove and her baby.

This has been a fun thread to watch, I hope it continues.  With members all over the world we should be to see some amazing birds (not that we haven't already). Thumbs Up

Very cool slate roof, do not see to many of thoughts in the States.

Greg, that's because you live out west, still a fair number of old Victorians with slate rooves (or roofs if you prefer) here.

Aren't we all in the birds habitat?  Tongue Out  Grin
But as I said "bit of a cheat" as they are unfortunately a captive subject, though in better condition/s than they were found.

Great Pic Gerry, owls are a favourite of mine.

It is great to see the birds from other places. The great horned owl looks like a close cousin to the European Eagle Owl.
These owls nest a half a kilometer south of where I live & walk my dog. I would stop in and check on them whenever i was walking my dog. After the young ones left the nest the whole family started hunting mice out back of my shop. They were there every morning until last fall. Here is a shot of the young ones looking a little more mature. I agree Brice the young ones are quite comical looking.

And in keeping with the wildlife / nature aspect, for those who have looked at a Blue Spruce tree and wondered how they got their name:

Spring is really here!  Yeah!

Nice looking pic!  Hate to say it, but its been spring down here for some time (almost feeling like summer already)  hence the crawfish boil! I'm the one with the goattee and a mouthful of crawfish.

Saw a few "painted buntings" flying around, but couldn't get a decent pic with my phone.
