It's been almost 20 years since I last owned and shot a gun. Getting back into it now and was looking for recOmmendations on bags to use for carrying to/from the range.

Boyt makes some very nice soft cases. Pelican makes some extremely sturdy hard cases.

Tim, It's kind of like tools, no one answer is right for everyone or every state. I teach firearms classes at a local police range, and CCW to both Police and public (if police want to carry something other than the approved duty firearms they need to get civilian CCW permits). What you need to remember or know is each state has different laws on transport and they can chance at anytime. Let's say you are taking a pistol to the ranges some states allow it to be in a locked case and fully loaded, other want it is a case but the chamber empty and the Mag out. Some states want the pistol in one case and the mag in another case. In some states even the mag can't be loaded. Long guns have their own rules. As a licensed CCW it is one heck of a lot easier to get to the range. As I can have everything loaded and with me without worry if I want to set my range bag in the trunk, in the back seat of a sedan or if I'm in a SUV/pickup that has no trunk. I use small keyed lock boxes in my range bag for loaded mags and if I need to un-holster and secure my Springfield Armory XDM 3.8" 9mm. Most likely this thread is a concern to FOG. Looking for a bag to take 2 handguns, magazines, extra ammo, glasses and hearing protection. Some room for basic maintenance/cleaning tools.
I am in Cali. I need to transport unloaded and in the trunk. Not sure if required to be locked but I travel with guns locked.

This has been my range box for many years. I can even carry a very good spotting scope with a bench tripod in it in addition to ammunition, targets, stapler, ear plugs, etc.

I think in California you have to Fed Ex the slide and barrel to the range, and send the frame to the range via USPS, and then use UPS to send the ammo. Once you're done shooting you have to do the same in reverse back to your house. You can carry the empty brass in your car. |

Station wagons, pickups and SVUs all are in the same boat... so to say. Most states let you keep both in separate locked boxes out of the reach of the driver. You might want to make a call to your BCA (or whatever you State calls it) and talk to them. Cheers, Steve |
