Anyone got their repaired TS 55req back from recall yet?
« on: September 29, 2013, 01:45 PM »
Hi everyone - long time reader, first time poster.

I'm pretty happy with all my festool products and was surprised by the TS 55req recall. I called festool and opted for the send in and repair option, figuring that they had already figured out the problem, what would be required to repair it, and that it would be a quick turnaround.

I sent in my saw over 1 month ago and haven't heard from festool as to when I will get it back. I sent them an email and at first got a generic response saying they didn't know when it would be for sale in Canada again (I don't care when it will be for sale again - I just want my saw back). When I replied to this, they said it was up to the Consumer Product and Safety Commission and that they haven't given them a timeline yet.

I don't get it. It sounds like politics, but I'm wondering if anyone else has gotten their saw back, especially anyone in Canada. There's a whole bunch of plywood in my shop that would really benefit from the TS to break it down.

Thanks for your time everyone

You need to read all the other threads on this subject. Festool is working with the feds on the issue and until they give Festool the go-ahead, there will be no response.  Don't blame this on Festool...

I'm absolutely sure that as soon as the problem is resolved from all players involved, the TS55REQ or whatever replaces it will be readily available.  Won't help to complain about the issue online. [sad]

Cheers,

Frank

how could one not blame this on festool?
helper: i used a festool "circular saw" to do something simple and it made it really hard

me: exactly, it makes simple cuts complicated and complicated cuts simple

you can't blame the lack of "response" on Festool , as for the problem that's a different story
don't take this discussion too far or it will be locked

Thanks for the info. I did do a search on "ts 55 req recall" and didn't find the answer.
I just wish that when they gave me the options, they would have told me "we'll repair it, but we're not sure when you'll get it back", as I might have picked the TS 75 option

I'm glad you asked.  I thought I was the only one.

I sent mine in a month ago and have heard nothing.  Meanwhile I'll continue to use my 75 which I had intended to sell.  Good thing I kept it.

We should be held accountable for not doing a better job of communicating to those who asked for their saws to be repaired. That's on us. My sincere apologies for those who have been waiting for their saw to be repaired without any updates. Please feel free to call us at any point for a status update, but I agree that we should have done this proactively and did not.

We have been at the mercy of the CPSC and Health Canada for providing us with approval for all things related to the recall, including when and how we can communicate to our customers. That's not an excuse, but an explanation.

My anticipation is that those who opted for their saw to be repaired will be getting their saws returned very soon. I will share any updates and information as soon as I possibly can as I know there are many who are anxious for info.

Again, my apologies for the inconvenience and the lack of communication on our part.

EDIT - Sorry if it wasn't clear from the above, but no saws have been repaired and shipped back to customers. We cannot do so without approval by CPSC.

Shane, as odd as this sounds, I have to disagree. Festool's hands were completely tied in this situation due to the very stringent rules of the CPSC. Those rules specifically prevent Festool from making any form of communication with anyone, for any reason, until that communication itself is fully approved by the CPSC. It isn't because Festool didn't want to communicate. It is because they were tightly bound by regulations that there could be absolutely no any communications until approved by the CPSC.

When that communication (a.k.a. a press release) has been approved by the CPSC, including its specific wording, only then will Festool be able to discuss it with the public.

Rick,

To some extent, that's true. But, we actually could have communicated saying that we had no additional updates or information to share. While that may not have been a satisfactory update to some, it would have been better than silence.

Thanks for adding your $0.02 to the discussion, Shane.

It wasn't clear what was happening and I appreciate your honesty and the update you've posted. A part of the purpose of my post was just to ask "hey, am I the only one, or is something fishy going on". Well, I've got my answer.

Thanks again

Is this an issue in Canada only or is there a recall in U.S. or even worldwide also?
I've been going to post my TS55 on e-bay & apply the proceeds toward a TS55 REQ -- should I wait a bit?

So now can we discuss this properly?  I'll start: how could they have messed up the plunge / retract mechanism but only in the U.S. and Canada?

Oops. I guess the cat's out of the bag. That was supposed to be released tomorrow. I suspect you will be getting more information shortly. I recommend sitting tight until that information does formally get released from Festool.

They had to let it out today, because they're all going to be furloughed tomorrow, along with all other non-essential gov't personnel. [eek] Thank the stars they decided my wife will still be paid as an Air Force Officer.

Unfortunately, no, it can't be discussed in much more detail than it already has been by myself, other Festool employees, dealers or affiliates. There will be some additional information shared in the coming days.

Edit: I would warn that any posts or comments on the topic by someone other than myself on this forum are strictly speculative at best and not an official response. Such posts may be removed my discretion.

From the Health Canada website:-

"Description

The TS 55 REQ is a small, portable, circular saw for woodcutting with a 160 mm saw blade, aluminum guide rails and a plunge cut feature.  It is 12 inches long and has a gray blade housing and a midnight blue motor housing with a soft hand grip and green accents. The date code and serial number are found on a rating plate on the saw’s motor housing under the main handle.  Recalled saws include date codes ranging from 02/13 to 05/13 and serial numbers 40033594 through 40074108."

Shane, can you confirm whether all saws sold in North America are included in that serial number range or are some saws excluded?

There are very strict parameters for how we have to report to CPSC and Health Canada. If that's the range that's given, then it's accurate and inclusive of all potentially affected saws.

The simpler answer may be that if you have a TS 55 REQ that was purchased in the U.S. or Canada, then it's affected by the recall and appropriate action should be taken to contact us for assistance and you should discontinue use of the saw immediately.

I think that an important thing to mention would be the selling of the saw. It is officially illegal! Saw one the other day on eBay. Be careful!

EDIT: What I meant was the selling of an unrepaired saw
