DP Shop Talk Videos
« on: February 20, 2016, 07:30 AM »
I thought I would start a new thread where I'll post the latest DP Shop Talk video released each Saturday and maybe get some discussion going on the various topics.  Here is the link for the channel where you can find all the previous videos which I have posted in other threads.

http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVphPMDEq-tlNNeQLjaJQZw

I'll start with the video that was just released today about the shelf pin hole jig that I designed and built last year.  I show how to use and make it and explain the advantages of it.  Have you guys used anything similar?  What are your thoughts on the concept?

Hi Dan, great design on the jig and your instructional video is equally well done!  I really liked the explanation of the accuracy principles.  thanks again for sharing your expertise.

Thanks for the comments nako!  I've found that I can make shelf pin holes a lot quicker than I've been able to in the past and they are also made with dead on accuracy.  For the small amount of time and materials that go into making the jig there is a big return of speed and accuracy.

It's true, not much green in my shop at the moment.  I'm working on getting some Festool gear to review though so hopefully there will be some green coming!

Tomorrow I will be releasing a video on how to resharpen OMT blades on the DP channel so if that's something that interests you stay tuned.

Here is this week’s video “How to Re-Sharpen Oscillating Multi Tool Blades”. I talk about which blades I find are best to re-sharpen and demonstrate how to do it. Re-sharpening is a great way to save some money on OMT blades and get more life out of them. Hope you guys find it helpful.

How do you guys find the Festool blades compare to other brands for durability and life?  I haven't had a chance to try them yet.

Here is this week's video release "Keen Work Boot Review".  I review two different models of Keen work boots, the Oshawa Mid and Abitibi 8" Insulated which I've worn for the past couple years.  They are by far my favorite boots that I've had and are super comfortable.  Hope you find the review helpful.

Here is the latest video "4 Table Saw Dust Collection Upgrades".  In this video I show 4 different upgrades I made to the dust collection on my table saw to improve the efficiency. One of the upgrades is an overarm dust collector that I designed and built for my table saw.  Like I mention in the video if you guys are interested in seeing a how-to video showing how to make the overarm collector then leave some comments on the video to let me know. Hope you guys find it helpful!

I just posted a welcome video/channel trailer that gives a brief overview of what DP Shop Talk is all about and the direction I would like to see it go.  I want the channel to be a place for discussion and sharing of ideas.  I hope that you guys have found some of the videos helpful and if you want to chime in on the comments on the channel that would be great too.

Here is this week's video release.  I designed and built a circular saw cross cut jig a few years ago for times when I need to travel light or make dustless cuts in a finished space.  I was finding that there were times when I didn't need to bring a mitre saw along since it was all 90 degree cuts that I needed to make.  This jig lets me make very accurate and dustless cuts. I also made a custom dust collection fitting for the circ saw to go with the jig. You could make it to fit just about any circular saw as I explain in the video and you could even make one for a track saw.  I have a Porter Cable 7 1/4" saw and a Bosch 6 1/2" saw and decided to use the Bosch for the cordless convenience and it also has a groove in the bottom to ride on the track I made.  It would be cool to see one made for a track saw if any of you guys are so inclined. Hope you guys find it helpful.

Just to give everyone a heads up, I am in the process of switching over the older videos to the new intro. So if you see a new video come out that looks like one you’ve already seen that’s why. I had an issue with the intro music I was using so some of the videos will be changed over to new versions. If you want to look at any of the comments on the old versions, you can find the link to the old one in the description of the new one. Hope that makes sense.

Tomorrow morning the video showing how to build the overarm dust collector for the table saw will be coming out so stay tuned for that!

Here is this week’s video release! This is the follow up video by popular request to the “4 Table Saw Dust Collection Upgrades” that was released a few weeks ago. This video shows how to build the overarm dust collector for your table saw. Hope you guys find it helpful!

I did a special mid week video release today with a video that is a little different than the regular format.  This video is a more casual, unscripted shop hang out type video and in it I show the router templates that I've been working on for a local children's hospital.  The templates are going to be used to produce adjustable chairs for the children in the hospital.  I show the templates that have been made so far and then show the making of the next 4 templates in the set.  Our youngest daughter had two open heart surgeries at this hospital last year so we have a huge appreciation for what is done there.  I give some shop tips along the way in the video and also some DP Shop Talk secrets.  If you're interested in router jigs and projects for a good cause then hopefully you will enjoy the video.

Here is the full video on my shop made parallel guides just released today.  These guides are quick, easy, accurate and inexpensive.  There are definitely more high tech options available but these guides have worked really well for me and I explain why.

Here is this week's video release on how to clean your saw blades and router bits to keep them running at their best.  A lot of times a blade isn't actually dull yet, it's just dirty and a good cleaning will get it back to cutting like it should.  I hope you guys find it helpful.

Here is this week's episode!  I show how to make and use a custom scribe base for your jigsaw.  This base avoids tilting the base on your jigsaw to make a back beveled scribe cut and also improves saw stability and dust collection.  I've found it to be really helpful in getting consistent scribe cuts quickly and easily.  Hope you guys find it helpful!

Here is this week's video release on safety gear!  I quickly go over the lung, eye and ear protection that I've found to be the most comfortable and practical after trying different options over the years.  We all know that safety is important and with well chosen gear there is no good reason not to be protected.  Hope you guys find the video helpful.  Let me know what your favorite gear is and what works well for you.

Here is this week’s episode! I show how my track saw guide rail case works and explain how I built it. It’s super simple to make and was made from some scraps around the shop but gives rugged protection to the guide rails. Hope you guys find it helpful.

Also a quick note about schedule. Starting this week I’m going to switch to a video release every 2 weeks instead of every week for the summer season. Summer is busy for everyone so I think every 2 weeks will work better.

Just a reminder to everyone that the DP channel is on the 2 week schedule for the summer now so no new episode today. Stay tuned next Saturday for a new episode on how to make the circular saw cross cut jig and a special intro that I’ve made for the episode!

By popular request here is the how-to video explaining how to build your own circular saw cross cut jig! The original cross cut jig video has been very popular so this is the follow up to that video. Hope you guys find it helpful!

Here is the latest episode.  In this video I show my edge banding process as well as the edge banding stands that I designed.  I don't have the space or budget in my shop for an industrial edge bander so iron on has always been the way to go for me.  I find that the stands allow me to be much more efficient with the process since I can apply, trim and file all at once without having to handle the piece more than once.  Hope you guys find the video helpful, let me know if you have any questions.

Here is the latest episode on how to scribe with a shop-made scribe tool that I designed and built.  I give a link to a free set of plans for the scribe tool and demonstrate how to use it to scribe in a cabinet gable panel.  I designed this tool after using a compass for years and not really being happy with the accuracy of the results. Hope you guys find it helpful!

Summer is shaping up to be really busy between lots of projects on the go and trying to enjoy the nice weather with friends and family.  I shot a quick update video yesterday while I was working in the shop to let everyone know that I won't be able to keep the regular episode schedule through the summer and added a quick shop tip on how I install side mount drawer slides.  I also talk about the two upcoming episodes that will be coming out as soon as I have time to get them shot.

I'm back after the summer break and here is the first episode of the new season! I've been really excited about the jigsaw table since it lets me make completely dustless cuts either in the shop or even more importantly in a clients home. It could be made for just about any jigsaw and really helps get the most out of your jigsaw.  Hope you guys find the new episode helpful!

I like your hole drilling jig. I think it is better (easier to set up and faster) than Festool lr32 system. Mafell uses the same principle for their jig although its aluminum. There is another variation of it on Holzwerken tv by Guido Henn.

Have you used the LR-32 jig?
