Kapex and Midi Vacuum
« on: June 07, 2017, 01:32 PM »
Hi.  I am thinking of purchasing the Kapex 120 and wanted to make sure it was compatible/recommended for use with Midi Vac.   I have read about some Kapex problems being attributed to power issues.  Some have suggested that plugging into the vacuum could reduce the power enough to cause problems.

Just want to make sure it won't cause any issues.

The midi vacuum is compatible with all festool tools that have a power consumption of less than 2400 W. Festool limits the CT outlet to 3.1 Amps for all non Festool products. There is an official description in the forum here.

Festool CT Dust Extractors are designed to be used with every Festool product in normal working environments. You should be fine running a KAPEX with a CT MIDI.

The only thing you can know today is what has been stated above.  But to more specifically address your question, there has been a lot of speculation about the Kapex issues, but no confirmation of an issue from Festool or a known cause or even an established pattern among users, so you would be chasing your tail trying to ensure you don't smoke your Kapex.  I use mine with a Mini and they are a great pair and highly portable!

I've been using my Kapex with a dedicated Midi for years with no issues. I swapped out the standard hose for a short bigger diameter hose and the dust collection improved.

I found the letting the dust collector run for a few seconds before beginning the cut improved dust collection. I also move the saw through the cut listening for any signs of the saw bogging down and acting accordingly. A slower cut helps dust collection.

You probably know to let the saw come to a complete stop before lifting the head to reduce the chance of throwing the cut off. I use a zero clearance insert I bought from Betterley (not sure about spelling). It helps with making a cleaner cut.

I know that here are many negative posts about the Kapex, but mine has been flawless. It was perfectly aligned out of the box. I did have to adjust the lasers.  By the way, find the laser Allen wrench that Festool hides somewhere in the box.

I bought the Festool wheeled stand and like it a lot. I don't often move my Kapex, but the wheeled stand works well when I have to.

Even the guys with smoked Kapexes would tell you they liked theirs a lot and they were flawless too...........right up until the time they smoked.

The problem most people have is the smoking occurs after only a couple years of what they consider normal use. The same use they put on other saws lasting 10+ years.

So what you're really rolling the dice on is whether YOUR kapex is going to last more than 3 years without dying and whether your comfortable with the steep premium you'll pay for the features in exchange for that risk.

I switch my Oneida mini Gorilla vacuum (HEPA)  from my Table Saw to my Kapex as needed.  Yes it is a pain and sometimes I forget to make the switch.  I am in the process of making some improvements to my crude  miter station and a dedicated dust extractor is a big consideration for my basement shop.   I do have a CT26, used with the sanders, DF 700XL Domino and TS55 REQ and I have both size hoses.

I was considering going to a  Box Store to get a decent (?) non Festool vacuum fitted with a HEPA filter along with a Dust Deputy to save some money.  After reading the about  comments, I not sure that is a good idea.   The power consumption for the Kapex never entered my mind.  Thank you FOG.

I would want to jury rig an auto start or buy a auto switch if I don't get a Festool or another Premium brand with the auto start function.  And then, can I count on the power supply outlet on a lower price brand or model being up to the task.  The premium brands like Fein or Bosch are comparable in price to a Midi which from the above comments is acceptable for the Kapex or even possibly the Mini Dust extractor is okay.

I really like my Kapex and don't wish to damage it.  I like my health and don't wish to compromise it or my families.   I am almost answering my own questions.

Thanks for any of your thoughts.

This could be a option https://www.amazon.com/SSC-Controls-S100-1501-Electrical-Momentary/dp/B017T2J2NC

Just run the CT off a separate plug as the saw and trigger the vac with the foot switch.
