Kapex Tune Up
« on: June 11, 2019, 07:58 PM »
I have a Kapex that needs a tune-up.  Doing a cleaning and replacing a few parts but the biggest problem with this particular saw is the base is not flat.

Options as follows.

1.) Sand the outside edges of the saw base flat?  It's just the outer edges at the KA-UG connection groves.  Just afraid that the
extensions will no longer plain into the saw base flat.

2.)  Add Glide plates under the base table?  This is the part of the saw that has the throat plate.  Are Glide Plates stackable to shim
       up the base?

Framing square in the pics is resting on both outer edges of the frame.  Sorry the pics load upside down but point made.

Thanks, Sam

Before you do anything, can you confirm your straightedge is dead-on? I used a Bridge City steel straightedge to check my Kapex when I received it. Mine is straight cross (with no visible gaps) from one edge to the other...according to the BCT steel tool.

Is the saw still under warranty? Festool could replace the bed for you if so? A lousy bed like that will throw your cuts off.

Thanks, Chuck!  Appreciate the comments.

Yeah, we have been living with this saw as a baseboard and casing saw for too long like this.  Short cuts are not good at all.  It's a fat 1/16th by eye.

We have a Starrett, something or other, at the shop for checking the shaper and all that.  This saw and most of all our stuff are out of warranty.   We bought this one reconditioned and I still believe that is a good way to go.  Just look at current pricing, crazy?

Festool has serviced this one for burnout but I believe a 15 amp old circuit is not a good idea connected to the Midi?

Anyway, just wanted some feedback, if we should grind this puppy or if shimming might work?  Festool?????

Regards, Sam

Chuck is right. Many people use their steel rules as a straight edge but very few are rated as straight edges. I bought a Veritas 600 mm straight edge a few years ago and have used it to check all of my steel rules. I only have one steel rule that is straight.

Thanks Peter!  Thanks Tyler!

This saw needs to go back to the job site Monday morning.

I’ll take the base off and try to answer my own question.

Cheers, Sam
