Title: Festool Clamps compatible with T Track brands
Post by: SRSemenza on August 28, 2007, 10:23 AM
Hi,

I just discovered that the Quick Clamp fits in my T Track. The screw type clamps would not.   8)

Seth,

What is the brand of your T-track?

Seth,

What is the brand of your T-track?

Dave R.

Hi,

The T track in the pictures is Incra.  I just went to the shop to try a couple others.

Fits the Incra with flat head or pan head screws holding the track down.

Fits the Incra scale track with flat or pan head.

Fits Woodpeckers track with flat head.

Does not fit Kreg track at all.

Hi,

The question of compatible T track has come up several times since I first started this thread.   If anyone has the Festool Quick Clamp and other brands of T Track than have already been posted here, please give it a test and add the results to this thread.   Also note that the type of screw head can sometimes make a difference.

Hi,

I have been told that the clamps will not fit into Lee Valley Track either.

There are 2 common sizes of t-track available and often used in woodworking - 1/4 and 5/16.  This might be the problem?

Of course, there are lots and lots of different size t-tracks....but 1/4 and 5/16 is most often seen in woodworking stores.

If you look at Lee Valley, they sell both sizes of track and hardware that is appropriate for one or the other:

The clamps work in the 40 series of 8020 Inc. extrusions.

I have some and tried it. The screw and quick clamps both work in the track.

The problem is the depth of the 5/16 inch track. Some tracks are not deep enough to allow the clamps to fit in the slot.

Any 1/4 inch track will not work, not wide enough to begin wth.

Hi,

Hmmm,   The tracks that I have found they fit are all termed 1/4" T Track. Not for the actual measured size of the track, but because the heads of 1/4" bolts will fit in them.   The trouble is that the extrusians are of differing brands have enough differences to make some work and some not.  Which is why I started compiling this list.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. Did you try both types (Quick and screw)?  They have different profiles themselves.

In spite it is not quite on topic:

The Festool clamps fit to the base of the Incra LS Positioner.
You can clamp it securely to the edge of any table and use the Positioner.

They will fit all the Woodpecker tracks however it requires grinding/sanding a hair off the side of each clamp, the leg that slides into the track. The amount was minor, I just touched it to my disk sander for < 1 second.

RMW:   Regarding your picture, what do you primarily use the two woodpeckers T tracks with the sliding bar setup for?

I'll take a gues!   Routering dados?

Yup - Dadoes but also other grooves/rabbets and cuts like the slots in the aluminum bars shown in the photo.

I can adjust the width between the t-tracks and then use various router guides and bits. Example would be using the Festool 40MM guide ring with a 8mm straight bit, if I widen the spacing between the tracks to 50MM the cut becomes 18mm (8mm bit + 10mm gap) and I make the cut in 3+ passes.

Add stops to the t-track and I can easily limit the length of cut. It works great when I need repeatable cuts, which I often do since I make multiple copies of the same small part.

Hi there, hi Seth,

did you try the Kreg Heavy Duty Track as well, or just the normal (I think 1/4") Tracks?

Thanks

Hi, welcome to the FOG!  [smile]

I only tried the regular, I don't have the heavy duty ( http://www.amazon.com/Kreg-KMS7704-48-Inch-Heavy-Track/dp/B0002QZ4UI (http://www.amazon.com/Kreg-KMS7704-48-Inch-Heavy-Track/dp/B0002QZ4UI) )  to test.  Based on the pictures of the heavy duty , it looks like the channels are shallow like the regular.  I am sure someone  here on FOG must have some of the heavy duty that they could try the clamps in.

I have the Kreg Top Trak, channels look identical to the Heavy Track, and they are too shallow for the Festool clamps.

I believe that all the Festool clamps have the same slightly slimmer profile as the Quick clamps in my original post.  So the compatibilities should be the same for both the quick clamps and screw type clamps assuming you are not using screw type clamps from quite a few years ago.

What I want to know now is if those Incra tracks can be set in 3/4" birch ply. I have a need to add them to my extension wings for my Kapex to make the fence adjustable.

The Incra T-Track and T-Track Plus are 1/2" thick so they can be dado'ed into 3/4" ply. They come with short pan head screws seemingly for that purpose.

Good to know thx..I Also found a 1/4" in track on Woodpeckers which could work well for my application, and it takes 1/4-20 bolts etc.

I want to be able slide my fence forward and back on my extension wings. I just have to figure out how to fasten to the T track since the top of the fence is occupied by the Kreg stop system. Maybe some blocking on the back of the fence with through-bolts to the track.

The Woodpecker track I have used, their "dual purpose" track, is slightly too small for the Festool clamps. They only fit if you file/grind a touch off of the sides of the clamps, which I have done with all my clamps and it does not impact their use in the guide rails, etc. That may not be the case with the track you linked to but the photo does make is appear to have slightly thicker sides than the Incra tracks.

Also, the McMaster and Incra track has a recess for the pan head screws, without this I think the screw heads may hit the clamp.

One person has mentioned the 15 series from 8020.net. I'm a BIG fan of second opinions when I'm about to fork out a bunch of cash for a new project.

Can anyone else confirm that the Festool clamps work in the 15s?

Does anyone know if anyone from 8020 has an account here on FOG?

All,

I know it's nearly 10 years old post, but it was so confusing to have all the information that I summarized it.

The only doubt I had was with regards to the difference between quick clamp and srew type clamp. So they don't have the same thickness ? is that why with incra t-track, only the quick clamp will fit ?

8020 has an E-Bay store and I have bought a couple thousand $s worth through there.  They recently made orders available directly https://www.8020.net/peaceofmind-online-ordering.  They also have  a network of distributors and if you request a catalog they also provide contact info for the nearest distributor.

I know it's nearly 10 years old post, but it was so confusing to have all the information that I summarized it.
While I summarized it, why not share the summary.

Quick Clamp -ok- incra T Track

Quick Clamp -ok- Dakota 1/2" T Track

The only doubt I had was with regards to the difference between quick clamp and srew type clamp. So they don't have the same thickness ? is that why with incra t-track, only the quick clamp will fit ?

Newer Festool screw type and quick clamps have the same slimmer profile. There was only a difference in them years ago.

In this case, there is no point to split compatibility between screw type and quick clamps.
I updated the list (it makes it lighter, less of a headach to read) :

So FWIW...
I decided I needed to be able to add some quick clamps to some 80/20 rails without removing the rails from the work table.

So, using an OF 1010, MFS and a 1/4" x 1/4" carbide end mill, I enlarged the channel so that this was possible. Just an example of what you can do with a router while working in aluminum. Just dial the speed down and take small cuts.

And don't climb cut!!!

So that's just the entry port you router there @Cheese ?  I assume it can now slide back and forth in the channel?

You got it Edward, it just makes using quick clamps real easy, and they'll slide the full length of the 80/20.

The cutout only needs to be 23mm x 93mm, however at the 93mm length, the clamps interfere with the router travel. So, I had to make it 23mm x 143mm and then put in two 25mm spacers to act as router stops. Those are the wooden squares you see at each end.

My New Profile Bench is working well with Festool Clamps..
They look like 40x40mm Bosch-Rexroth extrusions with 10 mm slots. I have those. 10 mm slots are little too wide, the clamp will grab but on the very edges, 0.5 mm on each side. I'm afraid it might chew up the sides of the slot if you tighten it well.

Peachtree Woodworking is near my home and shop and they sell their own t-track in store and online at ptreeusa.com as well as at
ttrackusa.com.  They actually sell two different sizes.

Mini T-Track - Designed to work with 1/4" hex bolts: Festool screw and quick clamps do NOT work with this t-track.  Neither do the Grizzly screw clamps that work with guide rails.
Here is the Peachtree Mini t-track: https://www.ptreeusa.com/ttrack_track.html and http://ttrackusa.com/track_%20systems.htm#1021

Heavy Duty T-Track - Works with 3/8" hex bolts: The Festool screw and quick clamps as well as the Grizzly screw clamps work with this t-track - but it is a really sloppy fit.
Here is the Peachtree Heavy Duty  t-track: https://www.ptreeusa.com/ttrack_track.html and http://ttrackusa.com/track_%20systems.htm#1018

A note on the sloppiness of the clamps in the Heavy Duty t-track: You can position the clamp foot inside the track to where one edge of the clamp foot is not under the t-track.  The clamp foots are large enough they cannot twist out of the t-track completely though.  I have some of the Lee Valley 5/16" t-track and all of the clamps mentioned work with that and are a much better fit, plus it is cheaper.

@SRSemenza
Seth,
You can add:
Bosch-Rexroth 30 mm - OK
Bosch-Rexroth 40 and 45 mm - barely OK, will grab, but 10 mm opening is a bit wide
Woodpecker Supertrack (5 slots) - OK, but might require sanding of the clamp, about 0.25 mm

Woodriver T Track bought at wood craft works great.

Does anyone know if there's a router bit that will cut a compatible T-Slot in one pass? I did a tonne of searching yesterday and couldn't find the goldilocks bit based on my measurements. 5/16" throat, 1/4 deep by 1/2" wide T-slot. I'm going to try a Lee Valley keyhole bit - unless there's one hiding out there somewhere!

No idea, but I can check my festool clamps tonight to see if they fit in a 1/2" dovetail groove.  I normally use the microjig dovetail clamps in that, but it's possible the Festool clamps would fit?  I suspect the Festool clamps would bind as the walls of the dovetail angle in before clearing the profile of the clamp.

Usually tee slots are cut in two passes, a straight walled dado to the make clearance neck and a second  for the slotting bit.  Depending on what your cutting, you're going to get a lot of burning.

Brilliant! I hadn't thought of that. I'm cutting my grooves in plywood so I was focused on trying to keep the edges of the grooves as thick as possible... but I bet with a tiny easing of the dovetail shoulder it'd be just as good. I'm sure I have a 1/2" dovetail bit, I'll check that on my next shift in the shop!

EDIT: Sadly, it didn't work. The dovetail wasn't wide enough. I did a second pass to take another 2mm off the width and it was pretty sloppy.

It wasn't bad actually. When I tried a dado stack/bit approach I wasn't able to properly center the bit in the slot and it ended up very sloppy... it doesn't help that I needed to do two passes in the router bit to get the proper width. I suspect that if I used a dado router bit at the right width and then just swapped the bits out it would be better, but I wasn't able to try that out. The system I ended up using made a very precise but loose enough slot that the clamps stay standing up but move freely in the 4' groove.

See the attached pics, don't mind the wavy plies of the HD plywood :D

That looks pretty good.  Is it strong enough to hold the clamp in while clamping something?

That is not going to hold.  That ply will separate right below that third layer.  (Or maybe you were just testing on the ply, in which case, never mind)

I did test the Festool clamp on a 1/2” dovetail slot and it did bind.  If you took two passes to widen the dovetail, the clamp would likely pull out of the slot with very little pressure.  It’s not worth bothering.  But I would recommend the microjig clamps intended for this purpose.    [wink]. They have a trapezoidal profile that matches the dovetail slot.

Absolutely. I clamped a piece of 5/4 hard maple, lined it up against the fence, and ripped a perfect 1.5mm strip off the right side of it (the jig is meant to act like a sliding table on the left side of the blade).

@RKA to your point, consider that the clamp is using the whole length of itself, not just a point load. Even on this cheap junk it holds very, very strong. I clamped the maple down as hard as I could and didn't hear any telltale cracking - since stock is being clamped flat to the surface it prevents the clamp from having too much pull upwards. I think the bigger issue is how long the edge will last if it's being constantly abused by sliding clamps.

Since it has worked so well I will probably use it on my upcoming workbench and assembly tables (from Timothy wilmots system workshop) for which I will use hard maple... It should last a long time!

EDIT: Just took a look at the Microjig site - that's really funny as they're basically demoing all the stuff I'm trying to do! Unfortunately their clamps aren't the quick clamp type though, just the screw-downs... having had the quick clamps for a while now I just have no interest in anything else! Hopefully the keyhole bit I try out will make for a simple two-pass process

Well, heed rst’s advice about hogging out the channel with a straight bit first before switching to the keyhole.  These dovetails and keyhole bits have a weak spot at the neck and plowing them right into wood can cause them to break.  If you’re going to do it just make sure you’re clear of flying metal bits as it enters or exits.  Mid cut it should be captured under your work piece.

Does anyone know if the 15 or 40 series extrusion fit both Kreg and Rockler track clamps/holding solutions?

I'm considering running some 80/20  around the perimeter of my custom MFT top (in hopes that TSO's potential track holder becomes an option  ;)), and then also running two sections of t-track across the horizontal 12-18" in from both edges (in between pattern, 1/8 below surface). The reason I'm interested is that I find a few of Rockler's t-track clamps appealing.

I planned to use Incra track for those horizontal runs. But wanted to double check that the 8020 (1530S or 4080, unless there's a better option) that I will be running can handle all 3 without a grosse amount of slop.

15 series works fine, bolt heads slide easier if you ease the horizontal edges.  I used 15 series 3034 as the tracks in my drill press table.

If you're talking about the Rockler clamps with the 5/16" T-bolts, they fit both the 15 & 40 series extrusions.

Here's a shot of some I ran around a work bench.

Here are a few pics of a slot I milled into a piece of scrap today with the cutter I mentioned above.
Perfect fit. Has a depth of up to 22.5mm, so that should give enough wood for the clamp to bite on. This slot is 15mm deep.
Clamp is an Axminster equivalent to the Festool quick clamps

FYI, I have the Veritas Quad by LeeValley (http://www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.aspx?cat=1,43455,61994,73519&p=73519) and it fits the Festool Screw clamp only on the narrower t-track.

Has anybody looked to see whether the long arm of the Festool and Microjig clamps to see how closely they match? Visually, they look very similar, wondering if the hole in the sliding jaw can be modified to allow using the Festool Quick jaw on the Microjig dovetail shaft. Not a cheap solution, but may be worth it if it works and that's what you must have.

They do work ... here are a couple photos of the Festool ratchet assembly on the micro-jig arm.  I've used the Infinity t-slot bit to cut slots that will fit Festool and other clamps, but the 14 degree dovetail bit for the micro-jig is much easier and better for slots in wood, with a stronger hold.  For the dovetail slots, I usually cut a slot first with a straight bit, then clean out with a final pass with the dovetail bit.   FYI ... if you need t-track to fit all the clamps, go with the Orange Aluminum. All the clamps work and I believe it is the most inexpensive around.

That's great, thanks for checking. I was going to check compared to the regular Festool screw clamp, saved from having to do that. Downside is that now I have to buy one (or more, more is better, right?) of those expensive clamps.

I've become a big fan of the dovetail clamps, and have been incorporating them into my work-holding fixtures - just finished cutting a new miter fence extension with dovetail slots, but will be using the new Dovetail Hardware that Microjig just released.

Microjig Dovetail hardware (https://store.microjig.com/products/matchfit-dovetail-hardware-variety-pack)

I just bought the dovetail router bit that Microjig sells; it cuts a radius on the outside corners and should make the slots less likely to get damaged.
