Heads up - RAS 115 and Sysports Discontinued (US)
« on: July 01, 2019, 11:50 AM »
Just a friendly heads up. If you want a RAS 115 sander or Sysport, get them now. Festool USA has announced these are now discontinued.

Also, the HSK sanding blocks are now discontinued.

All discontinued products are available while supplies last.

This may or may not affect other countries, check with your local dealer.

Lol figures - was going to email Doug today about the RAS. Looks like that shot up on my short list now!

Huh?  The RAS is the bomb, a secret weapon in the Festool arsenal.  Great for dealing with epoxy, stripping, and unconventional tasks like shaping/sculpting.  Maybe it's a low sales issue?

On the bright side, I'm looking forward to getting some discounted RAS paper.  That stuff lasts forever, so one spare box of each grit will almost certainly constitute a lifetime supply.

EDIT: Hey @Festool USA .  How about adding a new tool for every discontinued tool?  Updated CT's don't count.

@ear3, Festool USA has not discontinued the abrasives for the RAS 115. It's customary to support a discontinued tool with accessories and consumables.

@grbmds no mention of this product so presumably it's staying.

@ScotF ,I don’t see why it’s inevitable, if it’s a solid tool...it’s a solid solution...think shovel, not a particularly sexy item but after 2000 years they’ve failed to come up with an alternative, unless it’s hydraulically driven.

I just purchased the last RAS from the local Woodcraft today... so I’m good to go.

Since it was discontinued in Europe earlier. Wish it were not the case. might buy a spare...

When I tried to go to the Festool USA site to find out more about the RAS 115 I get a server error. It's like they pulled the page already and no more information is on the site.

Well, let's see what the Festool UK site has. Oh, wait, they have a promotion that will get you £100 back. Sweet, where's our (US) promotion, and everyone else for that matter. https://www.festool.co.uk/campaigns/cashback

Thanks Shane for posting about this. I'll be getting an order in with you in a few minutes, just wanted to see if there was a kit that came with some accessories I might want/need. Dumb question you always _need_ that stuff.  [eek]

Just a thought...maybe the RAS wasn’t the juggernaut we all assumed it was.

I recently purchased the last RAS from the local Woodcraft and the build date was December 2016.  [eek]    [eek]    [eek]

Tough to keep the lights on with that rate of turn-over.

When I got my RAS 115 a few years ago here in Australia it was being discontinued. It’s one of my favourite Festool tools that I own, I’ve used it for probably 20 plus hours over the past few weeks doing a refinishing job and it’s brilliant. The abrasives are 30% off at the moment so I might stock up.

What’s the go long term though? I know the US is different, but how long do they typically stock abrasives for a discontinued tool?

Cheers

This is one tool where using Festool abrasives isn't necessary because of a hole pattern. Any 5" abrasive will do. Festool's policy on spare parts for a discontinued tool is 10 years, but that doesn't include consumables like abrasives.

I use my RAS 115 more than any other tool except drills. As a cabinet installer, it works wonders for all the scribing I have to do. I might have to grab another just to have a back up.

I don’t have an immediate use for an RAS but since I don’t think there is anything really like it out there on the market I am considering picking one up as an investment in the future. It is probably silly as I am a hobbyist, my home is stucco, I already own an RO 125 but yet I still struggle with this decision. Please help me out with some opinions from FOG nation.

Perhaps it's being discontinued because a new and improved model is on it's way?

I've never even seen the RAS 115 before! Not available in 220v/240v though!?  Just watched a video on it. I'd really like one!
there's nothing like the right tool for the job

I'm not really concerned about sandpaper, but what about backing pads. Are they considered consumables if not how long will they be available. Would really suck to buy the sander and need a pad a year later and find out there not available.

When I closed my business I sold a lot of tools.  One of the few that I regret selling is the RAS.  I’m working on a project now with a friend and could use a RAS !  Too bad they are on the way out. If Shane reports that the pads will still be available I would track down one that’s still for sale.

For the poster above who is on the fence:  the RAS is a fantastic tool for grinding away material quickly. We used it for scribing trim and cabinets,  fitting counters into place, roughing up the edge of stone, and many other uses. Dust collection is decent considering how much material it removes.

So was the RAS just an angle grinder with dust collection?

A slow-speed orbital sander - a real gem - great for sculpting too. I would buy one before they are gone if you have any interest in this type of work.

I just received my RAS from ToolNut yesterday, went looking this morning for accessories and the RAS isn't even in the list anymore. I'm gonna be ticked if I just bought a tool that they drop all the accessories/wear parts immediately and leave me(us) hanging with a tool of limited functionality (as in no accessories). Why don't those accessories remain available, at least until they sell out on current inventory. If I buy a RAS today and decide I need a different pad next month (or in this case the next day) I am SOL it seems. I might find some inventory sitting on the shelf at a local retail store (of which the closest for me is 35 miles away), but other than that it appears I can't even research what is available on the Festool website.

The RAS 115 is still listed in the comparison chart of the various Festool sanders [ https://www.festoolusa.com/power-tools/sanders#Comparison ], maybe that is an oversight on the part of the web design team and it should have been removed. But when you go to the accessories page nothing for the RAS 115 is listed at all [https://www.festoolusa.com/power-tools/sanders/accessories ].

Regarding the RAS:  If you are on the fence - get one.  I reached out and have been told that there is not a direct replacement in the works.  Solid tool but lack of demand across the world is the reason.  (Sidenote:  Way back in 2009 during a visit to Festool a discussion was held with attendees and we were told that Germany wanted to know how we used our MFT's and RAS.  The sales numbers for those were significantly higher here in the US than in the rest of the world.  Also, while visiting the Festool connect event held in Lebanon back in 2017 there were pallet upon pallet upon pallet of RAS in the warehouse - and that is a whole lot of RAS based on the fact that they come in a Sys - 1 I believe.  That will account of the older production dates on the tools.)

I have reached out for info on the backing pads and when and if I hear something back I will edit this post.

1. Thanks for the post Peter...that's kind of what I thought and also what I was hoping for.  [big grin]  Maybe Festool thinks their new AGC 18 will kind of fill the void?

2. My new RAS was probably in that pallet load of tools.   [scratch chin]  [cool]   Sys 1 it is.

I can’t even remember how many years ago I bought mine.  It was honestly the only Festool that I have bought that I really anticipated trying and possibly returning.

My wife laughed.  I have used mine for stripping paints and stains off of decks, scribing trim, and just grinding away wood.  Yes, I need to order new backing pads due to age, but I sure am glad I bought it.
