11/64" Groove thickness -- Tongue and Groove Bit
« on: May 24, 2019, 12:24 PM »
Sorry -- a bit of a random question, but I'm putting down tongue and groove wood flooring, and would like to add tongue and grooves after doing some cross-cuts.  Also looking to do herringbone pattern, so will want to machine that nicely.

Anyhow, the wood I'm working with has 11/64" thick tongue / groove.  I guess I could approximate with 5/32", but I can't find a bit that does that.  I've been looking at cool variable tongue and groove bits, but none go down to that size.  I googled for a long time now, also converting to metric to see what I could find.

But I'm new to this -- and may be missing something.  A local store guy suggested I just use a 5/32" regular kerf bit and keep adjusting the height to cut the tongue and then the grove, but I fear that's going to be a major pain to keep adjusting.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

The stock is 5/8" thick
The tongue & groove is 11/64" thick and the groove depth is 7/32".

This works for me on 5/8" thick engineered flooring.

Grooves/Tongues are ~3/16" and fit the original flooring grooves very well.  Grooves/Tongues depth can be adjusted by moving the router table fence.

Lumber Liquidators sell a spline/slip tongue that works if you need to change directions.  It could be wider, but it was the only pre-made stock I could find locally or online.
