Domino Removal Tool (plus more) - video
« on: November 24, 2018, 02:59 PM »
Hi Everyone

I produce "Workshop Notes" videos from time to time and in the one below I include a simple domino removal tool. It is very simple and has its origin in my "Dog" extractor tool which I will also link below.

In the first video I cover a couple of other items including the Harrogate Woodworking Show. Some of this is a little self indulgent but what the heck - this is me and it is what I do. I was really lucky to meet Tom Lie-Nielson at the show and I was impressed by his absolute dedication to perfection in his work and his love of fine tools.

Workshop Notes #21:

Hey Peter,

How were the hotdogs at the show? [scared]

Hi Ron,

Food was a serious issue - I did not eat lunch until 3.30 pm om the first day, 3.15 pm on the second and 2.30 pm on the final day. Now I know how Phil Beckley and all the other Festool guys and girls have to suffer !

There were no hotdogs but lots of cups of tea and the odd biscuit (cookie).

I just use pliers.

I used to but every now and then I would damage the domino or catch the veneered edge of the board that I was using - hence this simple tool.

I just use pliers.

I use a soft-jaw type, like this: http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=32197&cat=1,43456,43400

But most of the time, I don't need to use it (unless the glue-up is on another day after the dry-fitting) as I always microwave the dominoes before the glue-up.

Those pliers from Lee valley are made by IPS (japan).  You can also search eBay and amazon using the keywords ips soft touch pliers.

Dominos come "damaged" from the factory with groves and logo pressed into them and surface fibers crushed. Pliers won't do anything beyond that. Besides, I can grab any domino size with one tool.

I agree with you svar... the key words are ONE TOOL. And guess what you can make Peter removal tool a multi tool but boring all dominos sizes in the same board.

Even better make one tool to remove Dogs and all dominos  [eek]

It seems that I have had some leg pulling about this which I did not expect as the tool is simple and it works. I am now cancelling my video showing a simple tool to help people with constipation and everyone can continue to use their pencils in the usual way.

Won't a Domino tool just chew out an erroneously placed loose tenon?

I made PETERS tool and it worked well for me yesterday     Thanks Peter.

I’m now patiently waiting for the Wood Pecker one time tool version any day now in the obvious Red color.

Thanks Peter

Still a great video and, I think, for those who have had some trouble removing Dominos during the dry fit stage, a useful idea.

Peter,  I made the comment about enjoying your videos in all seriousness. I always learn something and I am always entertained. You are talented as a woodworker and as a video maker.

I have had a few Dominos that were so tight I had trouble pulling them out with a pair of 12" pliers. It is more difficult depending on wood conditions and also if only 12mm is sticking out of a tight mortise. There are lots of ways to get them out. Peter's removal tool is just one way. And certainly looks like it works very well and avoids damaging the work piece. Basically it is a "jig or fixture" to make something easier. Some people have a need some don't.

   Other ways .............

Pull with pliers while trying to keep the work piece clamped / from moving. And avoid prying against the work piece.

Drill a hole through the domino so that something can be put through to pull it.

Cut it off flush and re-bore.

               Probably some others.

Other than making the tool one time it seems that it would be very handy to pick it up and pull the domino compared to the other ways. I will probably grab pliers first until I have trouble getting one out. Then I will be wishing I had already made the tool.

And for some reason I think I need to have hotdogs for lunch.  [huh]
