a strength related question. and others
« on: June 04, 2015, 08:45 AM »
longtime lurker, first time poster.

I am considering dabbling in laminating.
I'd like to build something along the lines of the attached chair. (build out of ten pieces of laminated hardwood - mahogany or lauan - the stand alone piece in the pic).
interconnect them with 14mm domino's.

my questions:
would this work or am i gonna waste a lot of time on a chair that is prone to tipping forward or that breaks in two pieces when i put my not too skinny derrière on it?  (intended size of the laminate: 50*50 mm, rounded edges r10 - or bigger if i can get my hands on a bigger roundover bit)
or would the laminates that cross over at 90 degrees several times make it look rather ugly?

polyurethane glue or titebond iii?

oh yes, the wood choice, i live in a rather desolated area of the Philippines and that's about it that we can get decently...

many thanks in advance.

That chair looks very similar to the Ikea Poang chair, which is plenty strong enough.  The legs on their chair are only about 15mm thick, so making it 50mm thick would be plenty strong enough.  However the laminate plies would need to be continuous from the back all the way to the bottom for that to be true.  Would mean a fairly complicated glue up.
