Two deep systainer drawers
« on: December 26, 2016, 09:09 PM »
Has anyone built 2 deep drawers for their systainers? I am going to be building some work benches, as of now I am thinking that I will be building them 30" deep. If I am not mistaken I believe that 28" deep drawers would allow me to put systainers 2 deep on each drawer and still be able to open the lids.

Does anyone have a good reason for me not to do this??

Thanks, Jesse

Hi Jesse:
One of my benches has a bank of two-deep systainer drawers, which has worked well for me the last two years.  I just used plywood and extension slides, with 1x2 sides and a stop in the back.  I incorporated designs from those who have posted here on the FOG. A quick way to search for ideas/pictures would be to use Pinterest.

@JesseC I went the 2-deep route using 28" slides, worked out fine. There is some info here.

Spacing is somewhat critical to get the lids to open fully, don't recall what I used but I can measure it tomorrow if you need more details.

Chris/Richard,

Thank you for the input, that settles it. I will be going two deep.

Chris, I agree Pinterest can be helpful, unfortunately when I go looking something else usually catches my attention and half an hour later I haven't even begun to look into what I was initially interested in...

Richard, the in depth post that you had made is great and very helpful. If you wouldn't mind giving me the measurements that you used for the spacing that would be awesome.

Thanks guys.

I have one two deep systainer drawer.  I built it to go in an opening in my work bench that was just wide enough for a systainer.  My bench predates my Festool addiction by several years, that the opening was wide enough was an accident.  After a year or so I find that I seldom keep a systainer in the rear space of the drawer.  At one point I spent a panic stricken 30 minutes searching for my Domino before I realized it was in the two deep drawer.  Just today I pondered  what  I could safely store in the rear position, for now the space remains empty.

@JesseC - here's the info on the template:

Routed out using a 1/2" top piloted bit. Drawer AOL is 700MM by 410MM.

First depression is 40MM from the front edge:

Rear Systainer starts at 388MM from the front edge.

Let me know if you have any questions.

gunnyr,

I could see that being a stressful situation. My plan is to keep accessories and the tool on the same drawer so hopefully I won't have the same scare.

Richard,

Thanks for posting the measurements that you used. It should save me some trial and error trying to figure out my spacing.

Thanks,

Jesse

Here's how I did mine it came out great and was easy as pie
Incase your wondering the first picture has an upside-down systainer under it
Then used that to pattern rout a template that I've used several times
