1400 centering insert

I have just purchases a 1400 router.  I am in the  process of learning about the tool.  I have a Whiteside inlay kit ( It may be over 15 years old).  The bushing does not fit ( it almost fits) into the centering insert.

I measured it.  I get 30mm in width.  I am under the impression that the Festool router insert is made to standard USA bushings (30mm).???

That's odd -- it's supposed to.  Mine is exactly 30mm and it fits the ridgid guide bushing set I have.

Double checked mine this morning. Fits just right.

I wonder if [member=61189]pilotboat[/member]  is talking about the 30 mm copying ring which is not what is needed for the inlay kit.

Peter Parfitt did a review of the whiteside inlay kit and mentioned the threads of the guide bushing were a tad large to fit into the Guide bush adaptor.  He just sanded down the threads slightly to get the guide bush to fit.


He talks about it at about 1:25 into the video.

That might explain the confusion -- since FestoolUSA went imperial, they haven't updated the website with the usual drop down menus/tabs to show included and optional accessories (hint hint [member=57769]TylerC[/member] ), so I can't tell you the part number, but I think it's this one, which as I recall, was included with the router (there are two options if you search guide bushing adapter on the site, the more expensive one being, I assume, for the 2200):

Note that the adapter is different from the 30mm copying ring, which is used in place of a guide bushing

Hi guys,  Interesting posts concerning my original post about a centering insert with my 1400 IMP router. 

After reading everyone's posts and watching Peter Parfitt's video about inlays, I went and looked closely at my part in question.

What I have is a guide brushing adaptor, part# 4935It came with the router.  Peter talked about them in his video.  My brass insert for the inlay kit does not fit into the bushing adaptor.  I 'll do what Peter did to make his fit.

My original question: I thought Festool made these items to accept industry standard sizes (USA).

Mine works with off the shelf cheap bushings from another manufacturer.  I suppose that it is possible to either have a defective part from FESTOOL or from your bushing manufacturer.

Threading standards have a certain amount of over/under allowances.  I have PC and a Woodcraft brass set of inserts that fit perfectly.  It is much easier to fix threading that is over sized compared to trying to secure a loose fitting fitting insert.  On another note, I had a set of 1/2" shafts made that fit each of the sizes of collars that I have.  There is absolutely no chance that my collars are not centered when inserted to the router.

Peter Parfits video showed him ever so slightly filing the thread width to fit.
I had the same problem with the Whiteside kit and this worked perfectly for me. Thanks peter for the great tip!
