20 mm straight

Hi

These bits are not designed to be used in a router, or are they?

The Trend brand range of hinge drills comes with a warning on the package stating "Not to be used in a router - pillar drills only. Max RPM 3000."

As similar bits from different manufacturers looks the same as the Trend brand, I would be very careful running these in my router.

A Trend page with the above mentioned warning: Trend Page

The linked page clearly states they're for use in the OF 1010, OF 1400 and OF 2200 routers, so he's good to go.

But it's a "drilling" bit for holes and isn't for routing mortises or slots. It's not a 20mm straight cutter. The 20mm straight cutter is a HW one (tungsten carbide) and is P/N 490971 on an 8mm shank. That doesn't look to be available at Bob's, but here's another link...

http://www.festoolproducts.com/Festool-490971-Strait-mortise-bit-HW-20x20mm-p/490971.htm

There's also a spiral HS (high speed steel) cutter which is P/N 490951 on an 8mm shank.

OOPS, my bad. Should have asked what you wanted to do with it.  [scared]

As Garry says the one I linked to is for drilling holes only, it won't move to make slots.

The ones he linked to don't seem to available in the US anymore, although maybe someone has old stock. Every one seems to out of stock and FestoolUSA doesn't list them anymore.

Freud makes a 20mm two flute cutter with a 3/4 inch cutting depth with a 1/4 shank. Around $20

CMT makes the same thing for about the same price.

no worries , i am only using it for drilling holes and i did see the notice on the page that said it worked in all the festool routers
thanks for your help
Billy
although the 2nd link was 20$ cheaper  lol

Has anyone tried all 3 cutters for making holes for a MFT type top?

If so, what gave the best results?

On the face of it the better value bit might be the straight Tungsten Carbide cutter as that can also be used for other tasks if required, but the upcut spiral bit might give the best holes for an MFT top, albeit being HSS once it loses its sharpness would be difficult to re-sharpen.

I can only speak to the Festool 20mm bore bit. It works great and has stayed sharp through 200 plus holes.

Cheers. Bryan.

I ordered the 20mm Straight Cutter 490971 and HSS upcut cutter 490951 on Monday, when they arrive I will do a few plunge cuts and see which of them give the best result for a MFT type top.

Upcut cutter (the spiral one?) works perfectly well for me Ed.

Thanks Dan, I'll still try them both, might even buy the other one as well just for the sake of completeness.

490971 will not drill a hole. The carbide does not go to the center to the bit so it will not cut to the center and you need that to drill a hole.

The hinge boring bit is the best choice for drilling only but a spiral, or up-cut bit, will work if the end cutting edges meet at the center. It is more imperative to have the router held securely so that it cannot vibrate or shift position and the high speed steel will not hold up as long. Run it at a slower speed and give it time to cool a bit between plunges.

The hinge boring bit creates its own guide bushing as it goes deeper and cannot side cut. For drilling accurately sized holes this is a real advantage.

Not according to Festool it states that the bit is suitable for plunge routing here: https://www.festool.co.uk/Products/Accessories/Pages/Detail.aspx?pid=490971&name=Router-cutter-HW-with-fitted-base-blade-HW-S8-D20-20

Hmmmm.....That is not the same picture as on the ToolNut site referenced above. Depending on the link used we are both right. If the OP gets your bit he will be okay, with the caveats already mentioned.

Does festool sell a 20 mm straight mortise router bit ?

Can I ask the application, or did I miss it in one of the posts? Is it to make a Festool MFT top or for 20m  Euro hinge? If it's for a top you may want to consider not using a 20mm bit in the first place and using a smaller flush cut bit and a jig.

And so many guys advocate the up cut bit, I don't(unless in a router table). I use the down cut bits or a compression bit when I can almost exclusively in regular router applications.. The dust collection is so  good unless someone is going far deeper than 3/4" the dust gets pulled from a down cut bit anyhow and it gives a way better perfectly finished top edge.
