2nd hand 1010 router - leak and base?

Hi all,

I'm slowly building my collection of tools and have been picking up a few 2nd hand items along the way.

I've just received a 1010 router and immediately went to have a play. First things I notice is the base appears a little warped. It doesn't sit flat and rocks slightly. I'm guessing this isn't a big deal and I can swap the base out.

The other thing I noticed is a bit of oil/fluid coming out of the plunge struts. Is this normal? The item was advertised as hardly used (and it doesn't look like it's seen much work). I'm guessing a seal might have gone?

Any experience/thoughts welcome.

Thanks!

Before you do anything else check the label on the tool for the Mfgr date and see if it's within the 3 year warranty period. If it is, send it in for service.

In addition to advice previously given I would suggest that you wipe the plunge rods dry.  It is entirely possible that the previous owner over lubricated and you are seeing the results.  Regarding the base - first check to make sure the mounting screws are not extending below the base.  If not, remove it and place it on a flat surface.  If it rocks, see if Festool will exchange it if under warranty if applicable. The main part can also be checked for flatness after you remove the stuff attached to it.  If not under warranty the parts are available.

Thanks for the replies. I've checked the label and can't see any reference to a manufacturing date?

Just removed the base. There was a small bend in it, which I think might have been caused by a small build up of dust underneath it. Cleaned it out (checked the metal base and that's fine) put back together any it's much less noticeable. Can't tell with a tiny bit of downward pressure so I don't think it will be an issue.

I've cleaned the rods up. The fluid comes out when I plunge it down. It's not a huge amount, just a dribble and doesn't seem to affect the plunge at all.

It sounds like it may need a cleaning (overlubricated as suggested).  My concern would be dust finding it's way to the pools of oil and gumming things up over time.  If you can, I would recommend opening it up and cleaning it out, then apply a light oil film to the rods, not enough to drip, only enough to lubricate, afterall, this isn't a car engine.

Here's the label on a ETS EC sander. On the lower RH side under "Made in Germany" is 2015-08...it was manufactured on August 2015.

As Peter said, I'd continue to plunge the router and wipe the rods until all the oil is gone. Otherwise it will just collect dust and grime and it could possibly damage the surface of the rods if some abrasive grit is attracted to the oil.

Ah ok, my label doesn’t have the same date on it. Nothing that indicates a date at all.

So I took it apart. Didn’t realise then plunge struts (is that the right term?) is quite simple. Ones solid, the other has a large spring and plastic insert that located in the housing.

Once apart, I was able to pour the bit of fluid away. I’m guessing as above, someone’s over lubricated it. Cleaned it all up and reassembled. Problem gone.

I’m wondering what the best/recommended method is of lubricating the spring etc? Would a bit of grease be better?

Sorry, just saw RKAs post recommending a light oiling of the posts. I’ll do that.

Other than that, it looks and feels as good as new 👍
