2nd sander?

Hi FOG,

I recently had a heat issue with my ETS 150/5. Steve at Festool was a huge help and a new pad is en route. During one of my conversations with Steve, it occurred to me a backup sander might be needed. I'd like to mix it up and have more than just the 150 size. I'm considering the RO 90, as the delta head could help with a lot of the detail sanding. What are your thoughts?

As you have one round sander I'd suggest a sander with a point, either the RO 90 or the DTS 400. Both are very nice sanders. The RO 90 is on the fast removal side and the DTS is more of the nice finish side. But both can do the other thing too with the right grits.

Checkout Paul-Marcel's YouTube review of the Ro 90. In the video he has a side by side comparison of a Ro 90 and a DTS 400. I considered a DTS 400 or a 93 DX before watching the video. I ended up with the Ro 90.

You're on the right track.  Compliment that ETS with a detail sander.  Grab the RO 90 as it can truly act as a backup in desperate times.  Although the pad will be smaller, and I believe the stroke a bit bigger, it can be used in lieu of the ETS 150 if REALLY needed.  The DX 93, not so much.

Grab yourself an RO 150 down the line for any work other than finish, detail, etc.  That is, if you do that stuff.  You'll find the ergonomics and spead / ease of use to be top notch.

The RO90 is certainly a great number 2 - very useful across a lot of tasks.

Another vote for the RO90.  I just picked one up as my first festool sander (was either ro90 or ro150).  Very glad I went with the 90.  The delta has already come in very handy and the round pad in both modes works amazing  I also have a multi master and the ro90 delta puts it to shame

I know I will eventually get the ro150 for large surfaces but for now the 90 seems to be a great do it all sander

Personally I think the DTS is one if the hidden gems of Festool sanders.  I use it more than the RO90.  However, you really cannot go wrong and both have their uses.  To me I have more control with the DTS and I really like the ergonomics better.  Give them both a try if you can and see what works for you.

I have the 150/3 and love it ,I just picked up the DTS400 (delta sander) and finding it very useful . Most of what I do is cabinet and furniture work .

As with anything you need to buy what will work for you the best.  I can say the RO 90 is the most versatile sander out there.  The ETS is a great sander For larger flat areas, but not much good for detail work.  If you need to do detail from time to time the delta attachment works very well.  Change to the round pad and you have a sander that can remove alot of material quickly or act as a finish sander.  Good luck with your decision.  I don't think you can go wrong with the RO 90, but you may find it becomes your primary sander

No, no.  If need be and you can only justify one financially, or for other reasons, then yes.  But if that's not the case, they'll all work very very well together.  Remember, it's the Festool system.

The RO90 was my first Festool sander and it's become my #1 sander, hard to imagine working without it now.

Hi guys, I use a RO150 and a RTS400 both brilliant in their own rights and keep looking at the delta but if I need to sand into corners I just turn the RTS at an angle  I guess that for really small detail the delta would be the ideal tool but generally the combination of the two sanders I have seem to cover my needs. Must admit that the idea of a sander with removable heads like the 90 and delta would be a nice addition to my collection though!

My first Festool sander was the ETS150/3.

After a while I added to that with a DTS400, but for some reason I didn't really get on with it, and ended up selling it.

Recently I got an RO90, and with that combination, and the appropriate abrasives, I can do pretty much anything I need to.

Hmm.. 

I am pretty boring ..  I started with an ETS -150/5 .. After a while, I used it to sand some outside curves and the pad failed and would no longer hold sandpaper. 

I ordered a new pad, and bought an ETS - 150/3 ..  I figured the same thing.. back up sander..  I recently sanded another outside curve project and noticed the pad on the 150/3 is failing ..

Festool pads seem fragile.  Apparently they use a different shape of velcro or something..  I dunno ..  I never had a velcro pad fail other than these..  I find outside curves seem to be hard on the pads..
