for those who are older and know of monty python, (the dead pan delivery by micheal palin) just makes it funnier

if you dont know monty python, the video is still a display of the angriest boarder guards on the planet

for those with "attention deficit syndrom"  ::) the video is about 4 minutes

 
I believe the former member of Monty Python who made a series of travel programs (of this which seems to be an excerpt) is Michael Palin (not Nigel)

An entertaining little video, and an interesting look at patriotism in  two countries that used to be one before those damn brits organised their borders for them.

(I can call them "damn brits" because I am one)

its the indians who wanted partition

we helped BUT being a middleman in such situations is a loose loose situation

they all still play cricket though  ;D

and beat us at it  :-[
 
it appeals to my sense of homour

the pakistanis and indians may well be in a never ceasing state of potential war

then to find out it is carefully coreographed between both sides (the english love difference AND compromise)

this means the ceromony makes me smile

being english its VERY important NOT to laugh at a joke, even though you might be "pissing yourself laughing"
 
Thanks, that was interesting & impressive.  At the risk of seeming culturally insensitive (not my intention), I can understand the confusion of Palin with Cleese, given that it was sometimes reminiscent of Cleese's "Ministry of Silly Walks" routine.

At the risk of continuing the political undertone of the thread, I don't see any reason for hand-wringing about the partition.  I majored in modern history in college, and IMO, it would have happened one way or another, and not much later, even if GB hadn't been involved.  Recently read an interesting interview of the author of this bookhttp://www.amazon.com/Art-War-Terro...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1195334744&sr=1-1) and some of the causes of the partition may be instructive to us in light of the wave of terrorism that's been building steadily in the West since the '70s.  I'm not saying he's right (about anything) but it's food for thought.

Not a Brit, but an admirer for the most part.

Confusion of Palin and Cleese???

only in your own mind, you of all people should remember that mr Cleese' given name is John.

Just a correction.  It was not the Indians that wanted partition, rather the Pakistan leader Jinnah that insisted on it.  Gandhi wanted to live together in peace as brothers in a secular democracy that India is. Jinnah did not budge, the Brits wanted out and the rest is history.

And just as well. India is now a booming democracy and becoming an economic power, and Pakistan is -----you can fill in the blanks.

No regrets from this former Indian.  Yeah and the cricket is still good.  Amazing what democracy, freedom from theocracy  and free enterprise can achieve.
