I will get round to creating a blog to document my quest for workshop orderliness.. but some nice bits and bobs on the hunt:-

This tool cabinet will make your work a pleasure and would be a unique and decorative addition to any workshop.

Matt, why start a new topic for every post? This could have been better done in one single thread.

For the past three or four years, my shop time has been spend working on small projects.  This past winter, i had hoped to reorganize my shop to give me more room to work larger projects.  About the time I usually start working in the shop for a month or two every year, it started snowing.  i was sanding driveways on Christmas day and from there, I was buried in glacier until mid February.  Nothing got done during the winter.  Along the way, i was informed (by BOSS LADY and daughter) that our bathroom was going to be redone.  By the time the work was to begin, i had talked the builder into letting me do some of the trimming, paneling, drawers and doors.  I had to keep up with scheduling.  As a result, i was able to keep up with the builders scheduling, but my shop is so darned cluttered with wood scraps and misplaced tools, i can barely see over the debris, let alone put my feet on the floor so i can climb over the piles.  As soon as the project is completed (today will be the final day of my obligation), I will try to get started on rearranging benches and machines for better work layout.  Also, I have (hopefully) figured out better ways to make use of very short wall space.  This thread has given me some great ideas, some of which I have already stored  pics and plans of like tool boxes shown.  I liked, especially, that tilt out drawer under the workbench.  That is a great idea I think i can put to special detail for my own reorganizing project.

I wonder if any person who has his tools thus organized has any surface space in the midst of a project.  In my experience, that is when organization is needed... when you remove the tool from its nest.  Now if I could only find that pencil...

Yes I suffer from the same problem.. get organised, start a project and end up with a real mess, in my case there a 2 reasons:
1) I don't have enough storage space to start of with so there is stuff lying on avery available surface
2) You need tools at hand, perfect storage is fine but you need the tools at hand, too timely to put things back all the time

Many years ago I worked on a design project to help architects when they used drafting boards.. they use to have them at an angle and pencils and pens would rest by the parallel horizontal rule, often making the drawing dirrty.. I devised what I would most easily describe as a angle poise light arm with a small tray for pens on the end.. work a treat, you could position it over the work and have all the pens at hand... now I am think of doing the same on a much bigger scale to keep the worksurface free

I will see if I have some old pics of my "angle poise" solution

That is beautiful.  I wish there was a way to open some Systainers from the front.  It'd make them a heck of a lot easier to use when stacked.

Yes although looking at that design, as the lid swings over the top you couldn't open them stacked

You're right, of course, except that if the Systainer were on the top, you'd still be able to use it.  In a tall stack, even the top Systainer is inaccessible and needs to come off so you can see what's inside it.  The latches are great for carrying but an impediment to actual use.

I long for a Systainer style system with a sliding tray at the bottom and a front door or maybe a panel that slides and pivots into the roof of the Systainer to expose the contents.  The tray would allow access to the contents.  I suppose the plastic might not be strong enough to support much weight without four sides.

Thanks Michael, although what I am talking about is something I can pull over the work bench/surface as I don't have the room to park something like that on the side.. I will sketch something up later

Norm Abrams showed that one time in New Yankee Workshop... I still stand by my belief that once you get the tools out of their orderly containers, you never have enough horizontal space to keep them and the project neat and organized.  Dang, lost that pencil again...

I can relate!

this is the only problem i have with the systainer system. when you take out 4 or 5 tools from their systainer you have to find 2 places to put things
