An Insane Project - Without The DOMINO

Until acquiring the DOMINO, I had ideas for projects which had to be dismissed as too time consuming to actually make with the tools available.  I like loose tenon joinery - but even for a simple table - 4 legs, 4 apron parts, 4 stretchers, and only one loose tenon per joint, you're looking at 32 mortises minimum, 48 if you put two tenons in the end of each apron part.  Though 48 mortises for a simple table is a bit much, I did a half dozen using the TREND M&T JIG and a plunge router.  At maybe an hour or so to cut the 48 mortises it was no big deal.

But realizing the speed and ease of cutting mortises with the DOMINO, a simple redwood "surround" for the garbage cans - using all loose tenon joinery - became doable.  We're talking 16 lineal feet of 4x4 posts and "1x6" (actually 5/8 x 5 1/4") boards - 100 mortises per 36" section (there are two doors/ gates).

Do the math - 100 mortises for 3 feet, 3 into 16 = 5.33. 5.33 x 100 = 533 mortises.  Without the DOMINO that would be insane.  With the DOMINO it's merely borderline crazy.

This project has two set backs / reveals and two tenon sizes - 5 & 10mm.  Other than having to mark the centerline of each board, on each end of each board and a corresponding line on the upper and lower rail - NO OTHER LAYOUT LINES WERE NEEDED.  That alone is a significant time saver, and one less source of potential error.  The ability to switch back and forth between tight and loose mortises - on the fly - made life SO much easier - and quicker.

The DOMINO is going to change how people build furniture - and even garbage can surrounds.
