Another one of my crazy ideas - the FOG Oscars

I had a thought after watching Ron's video on parallel guides. We all gain so much from people that take the time and effort to produce these videos. Would it be possible to introduce some kind of recognition? I was thinking of something like the FOG Oscars. The mods could maybe come up with say 10-15 nominees and then the community could vote annually in a simple poll for the best videos . We have January coming so all the pre-2012 content could be reviewed and then it could be on an annual basis from then on. A simple thread where people propose nominees could also be introduced to help the mods create a shortlist for the poll thread.

The FOGscars ???

To be honest - I believe the people that go to the effort are genuinely giving and are probably happy with the recognition and appreciation they already get. As soon as you make it competitive you attract an entire new breed of person that's probably not the sort you really want.

Personal preference - leave this one alone.

I do agree with what you are saying but I think it would be more likely to happen if there was a prize that involved some sort of personal or financial gain. My idea was a simple thank you from the community which might encourage others to share their ideas. I think it would also have to be strictly non-commercial videos to qualify for a nomination, i.e no manufacturers or tool outlets. The guys selling custom add-ons could and should be included IMO.

I understand.

Just gets incredibly complicated with who's in and who's out ...

I would commend anyone that gave it a go to the best of their ability ... again - if it gets at all competitive, do people shy away from contributing because they're being judged?

Anyway ...

I'll nominate Paul Marcel for the first FOGscar award - he's done more for me in explaining Festool tools than any - which is really the crux of this particular forum  [big grin]

I couldn't vote for Peter (Stone Message) - as much as he's very informative and a very nice fellow, the piano in his videos makes me want to run round with a hammer smashing windows!

I'll second Paul Marcel for an award.  His video of my Domiplate did so much for clearing up questions that guys have on how it works & proper use.  The same is true for many Festools, he is just a natural at reviewing and explaining details.  FestoolUSA should provide him with the first of all new products and possibly consider contracting him for "video manuals" of Festool products.
Thank you Paul!

Does Festool have a Youtube page? They could just create a playlist for FOG member videos and everybody can give a thumbs up on the video there.

It doesn't need to be complicated, it only has to be fun and the mods would have the final say in any nominations. They could take any flak in the unlikely event there was any. They at least would be used to it as moderators of a forum.

I also take your earlier point re recognition and most people are happy just to give without necessarily seeking accolades or fawning sycophants. However in my experience if recognition comes their way most people will modestly, graciously and most of all willingly accept it.

I would like to nominate Ron Paulk for his ultimate workbench and parallel guides videos. I stress that I said I would like to but he can't be a hero of mine until he sorts out the whole socks/sandals issue.  [eek]

Paul Marcel has to get a nomination too along with Qwas. Those two have done as much as anyone to enhance people's Festool experience.

I support all three of those choices and especially your point that it doesn't need to become complicated, just fun.

My vote goes to PaulMarcel for his review of the WCR1000 in hockey drag.

It's a bit easier to remember http://festool.tv to get to our YouTube channel, which is in my signature at the bottom of every post I make.

We have done several contests over the past few years that have been centered around video creation. There's really some good video that members have produced over the past year or so.

I could create a "Best of the FOG 2011" playlist if you guys want to provide links to what you consider the best of the best.

With a quick look I didn't notice any of Paul Marcel's videos on there (maybe I need a more careful look  [unsure]).  Some YouTube's that I have subscribed to give the option to be notified by e-mail when new ones are added -- Is the Festool.tv one like that?

Whoops, I see some of Paul's (halfinchshy) now.  [smile]
