I saw this chair today and thought it was strange, weird and unusual - meaning that I find it compelling. Might anyone know the origins or history of this kind of chair?

Did you sit on it? That thing looks as much like a torture device, as a chair. Totally flat seating is notoriously uncomfortable.
Pics of another angle? From that one, it looks like it is deeper than it is wide, translating to...not so stable.
Intriguing/interesting, but maybe not so practical.

@Econoline - looked up "Tyrolean Chair" and found an example that is very similar listed as "Antique Italian Tyrolean Chair."

Looks kinda similar.

@Crazyraceguy I did sit on it. Gingerly, at first - because I'm not diminutive in physique. Nervously, but then it was fine. Looks like it's made of walnut and seems rather old.

Here's some pics of the details:

I can't recall what they're called, but I'm wondering if it's a version of the bench seat that you use for hanging the clothing on to be prepared for the coming day, and sit at to do your shoe laces up?

That sounds like a Valet Chair. Generally, those look like a hanger, at the top, some having a drawer under the seat too.
My uncle had one, when I was a kid, probably the only reason I know the name.
