I totally concede on the ability to make phone calls point... but that's more ATT than Apple (yes they partnered with them).

Whoopty do, you can customize everything. Do you run linux or windows? unless you run linux and build your own kernel, your argument is irrelevant.

Maybe your friends shouldn't have paid thousands of dollars for a stupid website that used flash... what is it 1999? Flash (except for games and video) is pretty much pointless these days with all the AJAX toolkits out there. And the video people are just clinging onto their old technology so they don't have to retool. Nobody with half a brain would develop something new that required flash unless they were getting a kickback from Adobe.

And regarding the "Bill Gates did a tablet in 2001", Apple had the Newton back in the day (which was WAY ahead of its time), and the iPad sold more units in 9 months and tablet pc did in 10 years. Tablet PC did have some traction in the Enterprise, but watch that diminish quickly as why would you deploy a $2k tablet pc when you can deploy a $500 iPad...
 
My argument is not irrelevant, I run OSX and I'm able to customize my phone. Perhaps you don't think it's a big deal because you can't do it. I will say flashing custom ROMs is for  a more advanced user however the process isn't that difficult and the option is there should you need it. That really is the defining thing about Android vs iOS, options. You can CHOOSE your hardware, you can CHOOSE how the software runs. You can CHOOSE to use the huge amount of Flash based content here in 2011 where it's still very much alive.

The iPhone/ iPad are powerful and innovative devices, loads of people are very happy with them and that's great. My whole argument is more that Apple/iOS are not the be all and end all that people make them out to be. The competition has more options and a lot more development behind them.

Again to touch on Flash not that it's even the most important thing here. it would be like FESTOOL saying that their products would no longer work with MDF. MDF dust being as fine as it is tends to ruin motors on your powertools not to mention it's poisonous and as i understand not even legal to use in some places. FESTOOL obviously didn't take that approach but instead implemented state of the art dust collection and a rugged motor design. The problems surrounding MDF are no longer an issue. To say flash is bad for you and your an idiot if you use it is unacceptable IMO.

I like Ipad, it works for me, it doesn't work for you.  Good, wil i change your mind. No. Will you change mine, No.

Apple provides what I need for work (and, yes, that is how I make my living.  I am a profesional and happy with apple).

I hate anything to do with windows, I like Linux, Unix, iOS, Mac OS X (Do you know is based in Unix?).  Even Adobe is working in a flash to HTML5 converter.  

Be happy, enjoy what makes you happy and don't get frustrated.
 
Jailbreaking and Flashing a custom ROM are not the same thing but it's a moot point. By all means pick what device serves you best, not everyone needs all that crap anyway. They're cell phones for crying out loud.

On a side note android is based off a linux kernel as well. ;D

Festool does do that. They do not offer a hardiboard blade and do not recommend cutting it with festools. And I once heard someone here once say that if you did it would void the warranty. And im sure there are many things they do not recommend the use of their tools for.
 
There is a project going for flash on the iPhone and iPad at the moment I think it works only displaying flash web pages but they are working on video ..... It's called fash .....just for the record android phone running a custom gingerbread rom and iPad 4.2 jail broken.  Both are slick.
 
I'm a big-time Mac fan, but I'm starting to like Apple somewhat less as a company.

They are putting too much focus on the iDevices, with their closed eco-system, and not enough on the real computers.

Then they go and announce a new version of OS X and boast fancy new features that makes it look more like a cell phone?  That's just stupid...

For the record, I do like my iPod Touch, but I would never be a developer for it because I hate the idea of having to go through Apple's processes and beg permission just to be able to run my own code on a device that I bought and paid for...

A couple comments on that as a long time software engineer who has only used Mac OS X for dev for the last 6 years....

First off, if you are writing iOS apps, you can certainly install them on your own iPhone and run it without having to go through the app store. It's only if you want to sell it to others that you have get it approved.

Secondly, from a development standpoint, there isn't any "new work" that is needed on the OS X platform. Let's not forget that "under the hood" (and in that "Terminal" app you have access to), OS X is just a old good friend, BSD Unix, and that platform hasn't really changed much on it's interface (command line) over the last 30 years. The platform is stable as hell, and when doing Java development work (which is what I do), it's the IDE that matters (I use Eclipse), not the actual Cocoa windows gui. I write my code using the IDE, then when I need to run it, I either run from the IDE, or I step out to a terminal window and run it from the command line using an Ant target. And the best thing is, that I can run some simple and small tests right here on my local machine, then when I need to run my full application (which takes upwards of 20 gigabytes of memory!), and log that terminal into a Dell mega-server running Linux, and type in the exact same commands to run.

So, I don't see where OS X is lacking in anything from a development standpoint. Those features have been mature on *nix systems for quite awhile. And no, I don't do Windows dev (unless it's Java apps).

As far as making OS X "look like a cellphone". Well, they're making that interface nice and simple, which is really what it should be. Don't forget, 99% of the people out there don't need a powerful interface. They need iOS or something like it.
 
You don't need to obtain one of those certificates or whatever to install each app?  I thought I'd read somewhere that there was a process of getting a certificate and installing it, and that they expired after a time?

Regardless, this is getting way off-topic...

If "99% of the people" really just need iOS or similar, then they can feel free to use it.  The OS X interface was simple enough already.  If the new features are options, great -- but more options technically add more complexity, not simplification.  If they ever become the only way (thus simplifying the interface), then there are a number of more professional users who will be quite upset, myself included.

Some of them make sense, but others would get in the way.

Again, I have an iPod Touch and use it quite happily.  I still view it as a closed eco-system as far as the software is concerned, but understanding that it is what it is...

It just feels like the whole thing has distracted Apple from making real progress with their computers.

By the way, I'm also a software engineer, but I don't write for iOS (obviously).  I do write software on my Mac, but not exclusively.
