Appleply on the Web

There is no convenient source for Appleply in my area--at least not for the (small) quantities I would use. I see that Appleply is available on the Web at www.buyappleply.com. Seems to be the manufacturer itself selling direct. Has anyone purchased Appleply this way, and if so, were you satisfied? I'm a little concerned about it getting damaged in shipment.

If you buy it on the web and it comes in damaged, who are you going to deal with for a replacement?  A 4x8 sheet is a bit much for any delivery service to deliver undamaged.  I'd suggest contacting your local lumber store (not the orange or blue big box stores) and see if they have or can get Appleply.  Don't be afraid to get a good substitute provided that the dealer will take it back if it's not up to par.  My local good lumber store ordered me several sheets of baltic birch at $107 per sheet.  One arrived damaged.  They had the decency to call me and offered to replace it if it was too far damaged for my needs, and did just that.  Try that at the orange or blue big box stores.

Thanks, Sparky. My local supplier--Exotic Hardwoods, in Annapolis, MD--tells me that the minimum quantity for ApplePly orders is excessive. Colonial Hardwoods--in Springfield, VA--tells me the same thing. The website does not offer the 4x8s, probably for the reason you mentioned, but they sell some other smaller, but useful, sizes. I'm especially interested in the 1" and 1-1/2" thichnesses, to extend the unsupported span for tabletops, counters, shelves, etc. I've seen some installations in DC that use this stuff, and the results are very impressive.

I have no connection with Appleply other than having used their product on and off for hobby purposes for 20 years and being eager to bring your business to the state of Oregon.

You are right that this appears to be the manufacturer.  I live in Oregon and went through a tour of the Appleply facility in 1993.  Although their posted history is in conflict with my memory, I think Appleply was made by a relatively small start-up at the time.  As a company, States Industries is honest and reliable and Oregonians tend to be easy to deal with over the phone and by email.  I expect they would not want their product damaged in shipment.

The Buyappleply website seems to be set up for customers like you.  If I were in your position, I would contact them at either their suggested email address or one of the two phone numbers I found for the Appleply divisioin of States Industries.  In addition to your concern about packaging, I would care about the shipping cost.  Remember, there is no sales tax in Oregon and since there is no Appleply outlet near you, Oregon companies cannot charge you sales tax for your state.  We can become rather militant when it comes to the subject of sales tax. [smile]

As for delivery services being able to deal with 4'x8' sheets: that's probably why the largest size they let you order on that web site is 4'x4'.
