I'm planning on building a freestanding cabinet with drawers and lots of exposed plywood banding. Initially I had hoped to use Baltic Birch, however no one seems to be able to get anything above BB/BB in 4'x8'. I plan to finish by spraying with a clear satin finish, so BB/BB is out of the question. Now I'm trying to learn more about Appleply.

A Hardwood Supply company near me stocks Appleply in a C-2 grade. By near me, I mean a 2 hour drive each way.  They'll deliver product to me, I'm just hesitant to order without seeing it.  They assure me the face veneer is good for the type of finish I'm considering. Does anyone know if this correct?

i have made 1 cabinet with appleply but the reason i got it was to leave the edges exposed since they are so uniform and easy to sand, not sure if this helps. you could google image the exact product to see a comparable?

That's the exact reason I'm interested in using it (high ply count and consistent edge). At $110 for a 3/4" sheet, I'm hoping the face veneer is nice enough too?

Thanks, I tried that already. I got transferred and had to leave a voicemail. I haven't heard back yet so I thought I'd solicit members here. I'll give them another call Monday.

I use Applyply almost exclusively, versus BB. The grade and material are a world of difference. Even the B face is pretty good. The core also machines and routes better than BB too. I normally use it for drawer material and other assemblies, but there is no reason you could not use it for finished carcase construction too.

I have used Europly for cabinets.  I am not sure of the difference between Appleply and Europly, but the prices look similar.  Europly is costly stuff, but I like the exposed edge look.

I can't see why you'd be happy with C-2 apply ply if you feel BB/BB birch is out of the question.

I tried tracking down someone that carried Columbia Forest's Europly to no avail.  I was finally able to get in touch with someone at State Industries, and they were really helpful.  I decided to just bite the bullet and ordered the Appleply on Monday. Took delivery today, and it looks pretty good  [smile].

Brice, the only reason BB grade Baltic wouldn't work is the "footballs". With a clear finish, those would look nasty. If I had more time, I'd experiment with veneering to Baltic.  There's always next time...
